Biography

Bill works in the Faculty of Engineering at Monash University as an Associate Professor. Currently he is the Deputy Head and Director of Teaching of the Department of Civil Engineering.

Bill Wong’s research aims to provide engineering solutions so as to minimise loss of lives and properties in building fires.

Bill’s academic and research interests include designing steel structures using both elastic and plastic methods, nonlinear structural analysis and its applications to fire resistant structures design. At present, his main focus is on the use of shape memory alloys in structural fire protection. He is one of the Australia pioneers in using shape memory alloys for structural fire protection purposes.

An advocate for the use of plastic method in structural design, Bill has developed simple methods for analysis using both computers and manual techniques. These techniques have now been built into the undergraduate civil engineering syllabus at Monash University.

While curiosity is always a main reason to engage in research, the practical applications of the research outcomes are what drive Bill to continue researching.

Publishing a book on plastic design was another highlight in Bill’s teaching career. He received the 2011 Teaching Excellence in Structural Engineering Award from Engineers Australia.
