Wayne Gumley is a senior lecturer in the Department of Business Law and Taxation.
Wayne began his career as a solicitor in general practice in regional Victoria, and later took a position with the Australian Government Solicitor's Office in Melbourne, where he practised in administrative law and revenue law, and reached the position of principal legal officer.
During his time at Monash, Wayne has maintained strong links with industry, including a sabbatical with law firm McKimmie Matthews in Calgary, Canada, and short term engagements with chartered accountants KPMG Peat Marwick in Melbourne and Pitcher Partners in Melbourne. He has also served on a range of professional advisory committees at the Law Institute of Victoria, Australasian Insurance Law Association and National Environmental Law Association. From 2003 to 2010, he was editor of the NELA journal, the National Environmental Law Review.
He has taught a wide range of taxation commercial law and has personally established a range of environmental law units at undergraduate and graduate levels, including some that have been adopted as core units in programs offered by the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Arts. He has served as the deputy head of department and as director of the Graduate Tax Program for the Department of Business Law and Taxation. He received a Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2006 and has also been involved in several faculty and university-wide programs to promote education for sustainability.
Wayne has a broad range of research interests including administrative law, taxation law, ecological tax reform, environmental law and corporate environmental responsibility. Wayne’s current research projects are on tax expenditure reform, environmental taxes in China, carbon pricing and the role of complementary measures, and environmental impact assessment.
