Bringing the nanoworld into sharper focus
The underlying reasons for the behaviour of the materials around us are coded into the arrangement of nanostructures and the atoms within them. Our understanding of the modern world is predicated on the ability to see, characterise and quantify this smallest of length scales. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is the most powerful technique for directly decoding the nanoworld - allowing 2D/3D imaging and chemical analysis at resolutions of under 1/10th of a nanometre.
Matthew is a Senior Lecturer researching in the Monash Centre for Electron Microscopy (MCEM) and the Department of Materials Engineering. He is also the manager of the highest resolution instrument in Australia; the FEI Titan transmission electron microscope.
His specialist research areas are in the development and application of electron microscopy technique. Specifically;
