Intriguing porous materials make great advances in science and technology
Porous materials such as activated carbons and zeolites have revolutionised adsorption and catalysis technologies. With more and more emerging issues and needs, advanced porous materials with easily tailored properties and functions are highly demanded, but their design, synthesis, large-scale production and commercial application are extremely challenging. Professor Dongyuan Zhao's mission is to create novel porous materials especially mesoporous materials with a full control over the pore symmetry, size, porosity, as well as the composition, surface property and framework functionality, to bring these materials into modern industries and to test new technologies.
Professor Dongyuan Zhao works at Chemistry Department of Fudan University as a professor. He is duty-director of Advanced Materials Laboratory. Currently, he is a fragment professor in Department of Chemical Engineering, Monash University. He is an Academician of Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) since 2007.
He is now appointed as an associate editor of Journal of Materials Chemistry, and co-editor of Journal of Colloid and Interface Science. He is also a member of the editorial board of many international journals, such as the Chemistry of Materials, Advanced Energy Materials, Chemistry A Journal of Asian, Nano Today, Nano Research, Dalton Transactions, Nano, Ploymers.
Prof. Zhao is an outstanding expert in the control synthesis of porous materials, especial mesoporous materials. He has invented two novel families of mesoporous molecular sieves (SBA and FDU materials). These mesoporous materials such as SBA-15, SBA-16, SBA-11, SBA-12, SBA-6, FDU-1, FDU-5, FDU-12, FDU-15 and FDU-16 have been extensively studied in catalysis, separation and materials communities. He holds more than 500 peer-review papers, including 2 in Nature, 2 in Science, 1 in Nature Materials, 31 in J. Am. Chem. Soc., 21 in Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 21 in Adv. Mater. and 5 in Nano Lett. He holds for 6 US Patents and 40 China Patents with 38 authorized. His papers have been cited for more than 32,000 times (h index of 80) with single paper over 4990 times and 60 papers for more than 100 times. And he is one of Highly Cited Researchers and ranked 65 in 100 Most-Cited Scientists in Chemistry from ISI Company (Thomson) and granted as one of the 48 Top Authors for the highest citations in the past fifteen years in 2002 by Adv. Mater. Recently, he was listed top 1 in terms of number of papers and of total citations on mesoporous materials in the past decade. He has given more than 200 invited presentations at scientific meetings and congresses.

The overall research goal is the design, synthesis and characterization of new materials with an emphasis on understanding the fundamental issues of structural assembly and growth that will enable the rational control of the material composition, micro/nano-structure, morphology, property and functionality. Molecular sieves, and mesoporous (1.5–40.0nm), electro-optic materials, low-dimensional nanomaterials and organic-inorganic hybrid materials with especial interesting frameworks are being synthesized and studied. Current research topics in my laboratory are focused on synthesis and characterization of various advanced materials such as microporous materials, zeolites and mesoporous molecular sieves and porous coordination polymers, metal-organic frameworks and low-dimensional nanoscale materials. Synthesis of new materials and understanding of the synthesis mechanism are a target of primary importance among the research topics. Our research approaches center on self-assembly and supramolecular templating, molecular and block unite tailoring to prepare novel catalytic, electronic, and optical materials. These materials have a variety of possible applications including catalysis, separation, and electro-photonic microdevice.
Major research interests include (1) Synthesis and physiochemical properties of ordered mesoporous materials; (2) Microscopic assembly and macroscopic control of mesoporous molecular sieves; (3) Structure and design synthesis of novel microporous molecular sieves; (4) Synthesis of novel nanomaterials for applications on catalysis, electrochemical capacitors and water purification.
