Assoc Prof Franz-Josef Deiters - Researcher Profile

Biography

Franz-Josef Deiters’s research interests range across German literature from the 18th century to the present, the field of literary aesthetics, the theory and history of drama and theatre, the theory of authorship as well as the intersections of literature and philosophy. His present research projects include the "The Mediology of Theatre“ and the "Narratives of Work in German Literature”.

Deiters read German Literature and Linguistics as well as Philosophy at Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen (Germany) where, in 1993, he completed his studies with a MA (Magister Artium). In 1997, he received his PhD (Dr. phil.), and in 2004, he was awarded a Higher Doctorate (the “Habilitation”). In 2010, Franz-Josef Deiters was elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities.

Before joining the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics at Monash in 2006, he taught German literature at Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, and he has held visiting appointments at the University of Sarajevo (2005) and at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University of Frankfurt/M (2006).

Franz-Josef Deiters has published widely on German literature and literary aesthetics. He has given conference papers and invited lectures at universities and academic societies in numerous countries, such as Australia, Germany, the USA, Austria, Spain, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

He is a member of several academic societies, including the German Studies Association of Australia (GSAA, Member of the Executive Board 2007-2011), the Deutscher Germanistenverband (DGV, Germany), the Internationale Herder-Gesellschaft/International Herder Society, the Internationale Goethe-Gesellschaft in Weimar, and the Deutsche Schillergesellschaft.

Research & Supervision Interests

Deiters's research areas cover the history of German literature from the 18th century to the present within the context of European cultural history, the field of literary theory, especially the theory of authorship, the theory and history of drama and theatre, as well as the intersections of literature and philosophy. His present research projects include the mediology of theatre, the theory of authorship, and the narratives of work in German literature and culture from 1800 to the present.
