Biography

David is a Lecturer in the Physiology Department. Heis a member of the Rosa laboratory, with specific research interests in the neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of higher order auditory processing and cognition. Current areas of investigation include: cortical processing of complex sounds; connections of prefrontal cortex; and the anatomy and physiology of the primate claustrum.

I completed my Ph.D. in the Behavioural and Systems Neuroscience Group at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, USA, and subsequently worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Laboratory for Integrative and Cognitive Neuroscience at Georgetown University.  In both laboratories, I was involved in studies of the functional organisation of auditory areas in the cerebral cortex, and their role in processing complex sounds such as speech and music.

I am currently a member of the research group led by Professor Marcello Rosa, where I am involved with investigations of the anatomy and physiology of auditory-visual interactions in the brain.  Of particular interest is the role of the limbic system, which processes emotions, in the perception of temporally and spectrally complex sounds.

Our efforts to map connections of the cerebral cortex have led to an examination of the claustrum, an evolutionarily old, but still poorly understood region of the mammailian brain, which has been implicated in integration of signals from multiple sensory and limbic brain areas. The claustrum may be involved in generating a coherent sensory image of the world, and may contribute to maintenance or alteration of states of awareness. Interest in this enigmatic structure has been reinvigorated by controversial suggestions that the claustrum may play a role in consciousness itself. We are now attempting to shed light on the function of the claustrum through a detailed examination of its anatomy and connections with other brain areas.
