Title: Impact from innovation
Transforming unknown into crystal clear

Title: Dr Christopher J. Burns, Director, Research, Cytopia

Dr Burns: "We began our collaboration with the protein crystallography unit at Monash University in 2004."

Description: Female researcher at microscope

Description: 3D image of a protein

Dr Burns: "The project we've undertaken with Monash University is in the determination of the three dimensional structure of certain proteins."

Description: Male researcher analysing solution

Dr Burns: Cytopia is interested in these particular proteins because they are involved in disease and we are designing very selective drugs to bind to those proteins and block their activity. Thereby bringing a beneficial effect in the treatment of those diseases

Description: Male researcher at computer.

Dr Burns: "The benefits of working with Monash have been the access to specialist skills and equipment that we didn't have in our own team."

Description: Female researchers walking around lab and anaylsing test tube.

Dr Burns: "The project has had a great impact on our company in that we've been able to use the information to design better drugs for these particular proteins and therefore, ultimately for the community benefit, better drugs to treat particular diseases such as cancer."

Description: Male researcher using dry ice.

Dr Burns: "I should add as well that we've found the university has been very good in dealing with a commercial entity and building a commercial focus across the University."
