An urgent search is on across the globe to find new, renewable and cleaner energy sources that will power future development without further damaging our planet.
Our current dependence on fossil fuels has contributed to observed global warming.
Rapidly rising demand for crude oil, coupled with dwindling reserves, threatens Australia's economy and transport fuels security.
Monash has dedicated research teams working on cleaner energy technologies to decrease our dependence on fossil fuels and reduce harmful emissions.
Our researchers have embraced their responsibility to future generations by leading work in geothermal energy, brown coal innovation, biofuels, solar energy and hybrid car fuel cells.

Working with industry
Our staff and researchers work across disciplines and outside traditional academic structures to find real solutions to the looming global energy crisis.
We have partnered with private business, industry, other leading universities and government on a number of projects, including:
- geothermal energy generators
- establishing joint research into algal biofuels at Victorian power stations
- working with an Australian biological farming company
- developing fertilisers made from brown coal
- working with generators and process suppliers on advanced power cycles for cleaner coal technologies
- working as part of the Victorian Organic Solar Cells Consortium to develop printable solar cells based on polymer technology
- working on manufacture of liquid fuels and chemicals derived from ligno-cellulosic materials (biomass) using second generation processes
- working on new high temperature materials for use in advanced power generation technologies
