RoundupPharmacyThis year marks the 10th anniversary of the Victorian College of Pharmacy's amalgamation with Monash University, when it became the first faculty of pharmacy in Australia. New faces The college welcomed three new professors and heads of departments in 2001: Professor Colin Pouton, Professor Peter Scammells and Professor Roger Nation. Professor Nation has been appointed to the newly created Chair in Pharmacy Practice, funded by the Monash University Victorian College of Pharmacy Foundation. New courses The pharmacy/commerce double degree is proving very popular, with 140 students currently enrolled in this joint initiative with the Faculty of Business and Economics. The college is currently developing a second joint initiative with Business and Economics a pharmacy pathway to an MBA. Another new initiative is the Bachelor of Medicinal Chemistry, being developed in conjunction with the Faculty of Science for introduction in 2003. New facilities Major renovations across the Parkville campus have provided upgraded teaching areas and improved facilities for both staff and students. Cossar Hall has also been refurbished, and the planned construction of a new building on vacant land next to the Manning building is eagerly anticipated. Teaching news Last year saw a milestone in pharmacy teaching in Australia the first graduation of students from the new four-year Bachelor of Pharmacy degree. This year also saw the third intake into the Bachelor of Formulation Science, the only course of its type in Australia. Further teaching highlights included the Department of Pharmacy Practice's Dr Kay Stewart winning the Monash Postgraduate Association Supervisor of the Year Award for 2001. Research news Researchers in the Department of Pharmacy Practice are investigating improvements in the way medicines are used in our community. One of these studies is measuring the effectiveness of a new community liaison pharmacists program aimed at improving the continuity of care after patients are discharged from hospitals. A group of senior staff in the Department of Pharmaceutical Biology, led by Professor Colin Pouton, was recently awarded an MRF Grant of $255,000. The project will generate precise data on the selectivity of drug action at biological receptors, in relation to the research interests of co-applicants Dr Ian Coupar, Dr David Taylor and Dr Helen Irving in neurotransmitters. |
