Breakthrough in early detection of autism

Children with autism are now being diagnosed as young as 18 months of age using an early screening system developed by a Monash researcher.

PhD candidate and research fellow Ms Kylie Gray, who developed the screening system, said early diagnosis was essential to be able to identify at-risk children for referral to specialist autism assessment teams.

New treatment for dementia

Elderly Australians suffering dementia are reaping the benefits of an innovative new drug-free treatment used by Monash University researchers.

The Aged Mental Health Research Group, headed by Professor Daniel O'Connor of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, is using Simulated Presence Therapy to calm sufferers of dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

The treatment involves a close relative of the patient recounting into a tape recorder an event or memory from the patient's past which is likely to have a calming effect.

Cloned calves lead to better dairy products

The Monash Institute of Reproduction and Development's expertise in assisted reproduction and cloning techniques has played a significant part in the recent birth of Australia's first genetically modified calves.

The four genetically modified female calves were cloned from the same cell line, each with an additional gene for milk protein production.

The aim of the project is to establish technologies to ultimately produce more nutritious dairy products.

Major grant for malaria research

The search for a vaccine for malaria has intensified after Monash University researchers received a large international grant to help their fight against the deadly disease.

Monash University and biotechnology company Progen Industries will receive $3.1 million from the US-based Malaria Vaccine Initiative, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The project will fund efforts to manufacture two promising vaccines ready for human testing by late 2004.

Eric Glasgow remembered

Many anatomy students will remember the intelligent, enthusiastic and unique teachings of Professor Eric Glasgow, who died in January last year.

The Eric Glasgow Appeal, chaired by Dr Sally Cockburn, has been established through the Monash Medical Foundation to continue his work in educating medical students in developing countries.

Anybody who would like to donate to the Eric Glasgow Appeal should contact Ms Christine Kelly on +61 3 9905 2751.
