Managing knowledge

A new laboratory supporting research, research training and teaching in enterprise knowledge management has been established by Monash's Faculty of Information Technology.

The Knowledge Management Laboratory is a flexible, state-of-the-art facility and is sponsored by groups including Xerox, Tower Software and the German National Research Centre for Information Technology.

Enabling mobile business

A concept developed by Monash researchers Ms Christine Mingins and Mr Peter Stanski enables a field worker within an enterprise to remain connected to live database systems while performing real-time information updates and retrieval.

Enabling Mobile Business is built on top of leading-edge technologies such as Microsoft.NET, handheld and WAP devices and based on the Web Services (SOAP/XML) model. The system takes a pragmatic approach to development of everyday mobile applications.

Educating IT workers

Monash University is the lead agent and manager of the Building the Internet Workforce project.

An initiative of Monash's IT faculty, Queensland University's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Sydney University's Basser Department of Computer Science, the project will provide complete teaching resources for the education of software, network and application developers who will one day join the internet workforce.

IT award winners

Professor David Abramson, Associate Professor Kate Smith, Associate Professor Henry Wu and Associate Professor Ingrid Zukerman have won the 2001 Wallace Awards for Research Excellence.

The Faculty of Information Technology introduced the Wallace Awards for Research Excellence in 2001 to recognise and reward researchers within the faculty.

Breast cancer portal

Monash University IT researchers are developing a web portal of breast cancer resources that will provide women with tailored information about the disease.

Monash's Enterprise Information Research Group is working on the Breast Cancer Knowledge Online Project ­ an initiative that aims to help women find reliable facts about the disease that kills 2500 Australian women every year.

Monash makes multimedia work for police

Monash University's Faculty of Information Technology has taken a leading role in developing an interactive multimedia training program for police detectives.

The Future Vision CD-ROM program tests detectives' knowledge and understanding of the procedures and processes of crime investigations through the provision of simulated real-life situations.
