Priority places

Strong demand for registered nurses has seen undergraduate nursing enrolments skyrocket at the Peninsula campus by 38 per cent.

The Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Professor Wendy Cross, said there was strong demand for nursing staff in hospitals and the Federal Government had responded by providing additional Commonwealth Supported Places in 2009.

Monash was awarded many new places in recognition of its teaching excellence.
"It is confirmation for Monash that our nursing and midwifery courses are among the best in Australia. The government has backed us and we're thrilled to be able to meet the demand," Professor Cross said.

The School is expected to enjoy even stronger student demand in 2010, with a new Bachelor of Nursing Practice confirmed for the Gippsland campus and two new graduate-entry courses to be offered at Clayton, pending Nurses Board of Victoria approval.

The Master of Clinical Midwifery will provide pathways for registered nurses who wish to train as midwives, while the Master of Nursing Practice is an intensive 18-month program available to graduates from any background who wish to train as Division 1 nurses.
