Selling Sex (UNSW Press, 2007) by alumna and Monash Dean of Arts Raelene Frances (PhD 1995) details the history of prostitution in Australia from before European colonisation to the present. The book draws on archival research and interviews to track the ways prostitution contributed to women's economic survival and to colonisation and nation-building.

 

Crescendo: Melbourne Symphony Orchestra - celebrating 100 years (Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, 2007) is the latest book from Stella Barber (MA(Arch&Rec) 1999). The book details the history of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and includes photographs from collections around Australia.

 

Barry Blake (MA 1968, PhD 1975) has released his new book Playing with Words (Equinox Publishing, 2007), which is about humour, the part it plays in society and how language is often exploited for humour.

 

Myer Bloom (BEc 1975, DipEd 1975) asks Does God Live in the Suburbs? (Indra Publishing, 2007). The book looks at the religious beliefs of Australians. It includes interviews with Australians on what they believe and how they practise their faith.

 

The latest contribution from barrister Julian Burnside QC (BEc 1972, LLB 1973) is called Watching Brief (Scribe Publications, 2007). The author contends that respect for human rights and the international rule of law has declined in the 21st century, and discusses the impact of recent cases involving David Hicks, Jack Thomas and Van Nguyen.

 

Cher Chidzey (BSc 1979) has published a memoir entitled The House of Ninety-Nine Closed Doors (Self published, 2007), which is an account of Cher's family life and journey from Shantou to Singapore before the Second World War.

 

Edward Humphreys (BA 1997) has written Andrew Fisher: The Forgotten Man (Sports and Editorial Services Australia, 2007). The book attempts to redress what the author sees as important omissions from previous publications about former Prime Minister Andrew Fisher.

 

Afghanistan - Waiting for the Bus (Ginninderra Press, 2007) is a collection of poetry by Adele Jones (BA 1979, BEd 1981, MEdSt 1984, PhD 1989). Her poems are based on the Afghan people, the ongoing war in Afghanistan, the international security forces and international aid agencies.

 

Mark Lintermans (BSc(Hons) 1980) has released Fishes of the Murray-Darling Basin: An Introductory Guide. The book identifies the biology and habitat of 57 species of fish found in the Basin.

 

Bruce Scates (BA(Hons) 1980, PhD 1995) has written Return to Gallipoli: Pilgrimages to the Battlefields of World War I (Cambridge University Press, 2006). The book tells the story of Australians who make their emotional pilgrimage to Gallipoli.

 

Torture and the Military Profession (Palgrave Macmillan, 2007) by Jessica Wolfendale (PhD 2005), examines the spread of military torture. She argues that if the military is genuinely committed to its stated moral values, then it must radically rethink current training methods.
