Prominent alumni

  • Sir Weary Dunlop (late 1920s), AC CMG OBE (1907–1993)
  • Professor Val Stella (BPharm 1968), Distinguished Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Kansas
  • Dr Colin Reddrop (BPharm 1971), Vice-President, Global Drug Development Portfolio and Strategy at AstraZeneca in the UK
  • Dr David Graham (BPharm 1969), National Manager, Therapeutic Goods Administration
  • Professor Ho-Leung Fung (PHC 1967), Professor and Chair Emeritus in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

VCP through the years

1881 Victorian College of Pharmacy established as the School of the Pharmaceutical Society of Victoria.
1884 Classes move from the Technological Museum to the County Court building in Swanston Street, Melbourne.
1920 ATS Sissons appointed as the first dean of the college. He retires in 1962.
1960 The college moves into the new War Memorial building in Royal Parade, Parkville.
1968 Bachelor of Pharmacy degree awarded as the first non-university degree in Australia.
1970 The college becomes the first non-university in Australia to be able to grant masters and PhD degrees.
1976 The college becomes an independent autonomous College of Advanced Education.
1980's Professor Mark von Itzstein and Dr Wen-Yang Wu join scientists from the CSIRO and develop Relenza, a new drug to treat flu.
1986 Drug development company IDT (Institute of Drug Technology Australia Limited) formed to commercialise drug discoveries at the college.
1990 Heads of agreement signed between the college and Monash University.
1991 Professor Colin Chapman appointed Dean and Director of the college.
1992 Passage of the Monash University (Pharmacy College) Act formalises the merger of Monash and the college.
1998 Acrux Limited established after researchers at the college invent a method for delivering drugs through the skin.
2000 Bachelor of Formulation Science commences
2003 Bachelor of Medicinal Chemistry commences
2004 Professor Bill Charman and his team help develop the new and highly effective anti-malarial drug OZ277/RBx11160.
2006 Victorian College of Pharmacy celebrates 125 years
