Global alumni networks update

May 2006

Make new contacts in your area of interest by getting involved with an alumni network or attending events. For full details of networks, events and alumni privileges, contact the Alumni Relations Office or visit the Alumni website.

Monash Alumni Association

All graduates are eligible to join the Monash Alumni Association (MAA), run by alumni for alumni. Based in Melbourne but with active interstate and international supporters, the MAA runs a program to support the development of its members and their continued association with Monash. An annual membership fee of $66 plus a one-off joining fee entitles members to benefits that include:

  • Mentoring program -- mentors and mentees enjoy unique and life-enhancing professional experiences
  • Gearing for Success breakfast seminars -- complimentary attendance at four seminars each year featuring leading alumni and academics
  • Marketing chapter -- seminar series featuring leading marketers as guest speakers, special newsletters, reports and invitations for Monash marketing graduates
  • Networking -- special events including the Chancellor's Cup Golf Day, Sir John Monash Stakes Race Day and Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner, supported by fortnightly membership news and special interest group publications
  • Community grants -- awarded to support members' volunteer work in the community
  • Special offers on accommodation, leisure, travel, entertainment and services.

Monash Environmental Alumni

The School of Geography and Environmental Science, together with the Monash Environmental Alumni and the Monash Sustainability Institute, held a series of monthly sustainability forums in 2005 featuring speakers such as Victorian Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability Dr Ian McPhail, Australia Institute Executive Director Dr Clive Hamilton and Melbourne Water Managing Director Mr Rob Skinner. The forums covered topics including climate change, energy futures, changing consumption patterns and sustainable water use. Environmental alumni can stay informed of future forums and other Monash Environmental Alumni opportunities and events in 2006 by keeping their contact details updated with the Alumni Relations Office.

Law

Professor Richard Fox, one of the Law School 's most distinguished scholars, has retired after 34 years of service. Emeritus Professor David E. Allan AM, one of the founding deans of the faculty (1971 to 1976), passed away in February. His contribution to the Monash Law School is greatly appreciated.

Events for Monash law graduates in 2006 include a law conference in Prato , Italy (30 June to 1 July), the 2006 Great Law Week Debate, lectures at the Monash Law Chambers, and the Annual Alumni Soiree (November). Law Matters will be mailed in May and September.

Monash law alumni are invited to become mentors to current Monash law students to assist them in their professional development.

Civil Engineering

Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management (IEEM)

The IEEM Alumni Network celebrates the experiences of its members and provides support to recent graduates through social gatherings, often with guest speakers. Tanya Seidel (BE(Ind&Comp)(Hons) 2002), an industrial engineer at Toyota , is the new IEEM Alumni Council president and is looking forward to the year ahead in her role.

Business and Economics

The next edition of the Monash Business Review, available from 3 July, will feature the latest research on work/life balance. The journal is a Faculty of Business and Economics initiative published three times a year. All Business and Economics postgraduate alumni receive free access to the journal; other alumni receive discounted access. For inquiries, contact marketing.epress@lib.monash.edu.au.

Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences

The faculty's alumni program for 2006 includes the Dean's Public Lecture Series, the Great Alumni Debate, graduation-year reunions, an alumni cocktail function and an alumni golf day as well as communications via newsletter and email. Pharmacy

This year, the Victorian College of Pharmacy celebrates its 125th anniversary. Special events include the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at the original campus in Swanston Street , a public lecture series, a Gearing for Success breakfast seminar and an open day. Three graduate reunions will be held – a 25th anniversary reunion for 1981, a 30th anniversary reunion for 1976 and a 50th anniversary reunion for 1956. Hong Kong

Current president of the Monash University Hong Kong Alumni Association Anas Ng (BBus 1999) invites alumni in Hong Kong to join in the association's activities. Recent highlights include a dragon boat competition and a cocktail function hosted by the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor. Malaysia

The Monash Alumni Group (MAG) holds monthly networking activities for alumni in Malaysia that include seminars, dinners and excursions. MAG president is Cheryl Teh (BCom 1994, GradDipMktg 1995). Singapore

The Monash University Alumni Association of Singapore (MUAAS) provides a program of social, recreational and networking events for members and also collaborates with other alumni organisations in Singapore and the region to create an extended network of contacts. Event highlights include an annual function hosted by the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor. The President of MUAAS is the 2003 Monash University Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, Dato' Dr Jannie Tay (BSc 1968, MSc 1971). Annual membership is S$30 and life membership S$200. United Kingdom

The Monash London Centre organises activities throughout the year, from seminars and conferences to networking functions. Earlier this year, centre director Professor Graeme Davison questioned national identity at a seminar titled 'Country life: the rise and decline of an Australian ideal'. Graduates living in the UK are invited to participate in the program of events, which can be viewed at the London Centre events and activities website.

Australia Day Honours

Commonwealth Games

Five Monash alumni represented Australia at the Commonwealth Games:

Lauren Hewitt (BSc 2005) and Rosie Hooper (BA 2005, LLB(Hons) 2005) competed in athletics; Travis Brooks (BComp 2005) in hockey; Janine Ilitch (BE(Civ) 1997) in netball; and Irena Olevsky (BBus(BBLI-Gipps) 1997) in synchronised swimming.
