New dean takes helm
The Faculty of Law earlier this year welcomed its new dean, Professor Arie Freiberg, who was previously dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne. The appointment sees him return to Monash, where he worked from 1976 to 1990, rising from the rank of tutor to reader in law.
Professor Freiberg says he wants to attract the most promising students to the faculty.
"
I want to make the Monash Law faculty the first choice for top students from leading schools and encourage students from a broad range of backgrounds, particularly those from the Indigenous community, which is under-represented in law," he says.
"I also fully support the promotion of the faculty's multidisciplinary qualities. We are committed to developing high-quality graduates with a good grounding in legal, social and ethical issues. Our students have the rare opportunity to obtain practical legal training at our two community legal centres, the Springvale Monash Legal Service and the Monash-Oakleigh Legal Service."
Monash Law is also home to major research centres including the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law, the Centre for Law in the Digital Economy, and the Centre for Law and Reconstruction in Southern Africa (CLARISA).
