Monash around the world

Malaysia

Established: 1998
Student enrolment: 1779
Courses: engineering, science, information technology, business and economics, and arts
Location: No. 2, Jalan Kolej, Bandar Sunway in Petaling Jaya

"Monash University Malaysia was the first foreign branch campus of a university to establish itself in Malaysia and is currently the biggest. It has been very successful and has become something of a household name in Malaysia. The future looks bright, with an increasing range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses and professional training, and development of research capacity and collaborations.

"The campus plays an important role in the global Monash plan, providing another international campus for Monash staff and students. It is also an important institution in its own right in the region, engaging with the Malaysian community and attracting international students from a range of regional countries."

Professor Merilyn Liddell
Pro vice-chancellor, Monash University Malaysia

South Africa

Established: 2001
Student enrolment: 335
Courses: arts, business and economics, and information technology
Location: 144 Peter Road, Ruimsig in Roodepoort, Johannesburg

"Monash South Africa is a unique institution in an environment where international education has been out of reach for the majority of the population. The expansion of Monash beyond Australia is about providing people with the tools to harness their potential and hence grow in all manner of ways.

"A distinct strength of Monash South Africa is its lack of historical baggage. This is indeed a good position to be in, in a country that has been recently reborn. And with the global spotlight turning steadily towards the African continent, the Centre for Law and Reconstruction in Southern Africa (CLARISA), the first research centre to be located on the South Africa campus, is already making a valuable contribution to research that benefits the region.

In time, further research projects will be undertaken to strengthen the reputation of the university while simultaneously promoting positive change. The energy, diversity and vitality of Africa has the capacity to enrich Monash, in Australia and elsewhere, in the years ahead."

Professor John Anderson
Pro vice-chancellor, Monash South Africa

England

Established: 2000, launched 2002
Location: 171 The Strand, London

"The Monash London Centre functions as a base for student recruitment and liaison for student exchanges and is considering the introduction of summer teaching programs. However, it is the research facilitation that is of highest priority. Australian universities do not have a highly visible profile in the UK and Europe, and it is essential that we capitalise on existing links that individual academics have with institutions in the region, and expand these to new connections. In this way, Monash will be able to position itself as a leading player in Europe.

"The centre is becoming recognised within the university for its capacity to facilitate international research collaborations. For academics travelling to London, the centre can arrange meetings with research colleagues and provide opportunities to present research seminars."

Professor Merran Evans
Director, Monash London Centre

Italy

Established: 2001
Location: Palazzo Vaj, Via Pugliesi 26, 59100 Prato, Tuscany

"The Monash Centre in Prato provides the university with a prestigious site in a key area of western Europe. It has attractive facilities for teaching and research and for conferences and seminars and is close to the European University Institute - the European Union's research university - and to many other European and North American university research and teaching centres.

"Together with Monash's London Centre, Prato seeks to consolidate existing, and to establish new, collaborative research links with various European tertiary, industry and governmental institutions. Such collaborations will enable us to participate in bids for research funding from the EU. Our physical presence in Europe gives conviction to our search for research collaborators."

Professor Bill Kent
Director, Monash Prato Centre
