1950s

Retired communications engineer Stan Brown (DipElecEng 1953) writes he was delighted to attend the Gippsland reunions this year and meet with fellow diplomates of the former Yallourn Technical College.

1960s

Ian Wilcock (DipEd 1969) has taken up the post of High Commissioner to South Africa. Opting out of the 'corporate jungle' in favour of semi-retirement, Allan Fleer (BEc 1969) and wife Toni have purchased a 19th-century heritage-listed bed and breakfast cottage in Sorrento. Tawanchai Xoomsai (BEc 1967) is working in Bangkok as an independent researcher/teacher, translator and interpreter in the social sciences and is actively involved in projects aimed at developing Thai human resources. He would like to hear from alumni of the ECOPs class of 1967.

1970s

After 49 years serving public education, Ronald Ikin (BA 1973, BEd 1975, MEd 1985) has moved into private consultancy. Ken Barnes (BEc 1975) has retired from his career in the Department of Defence and is now a volunteer for the National Trust conducting tours of inner Melbourne. After 25 years in secondary education, Brian Herrmann (BSc 1977) has retired to undertake full-time parental duties. Continuing her career in university teaching, Christina Sindt (BSc(Hons) 1976) is now a senior lecturer at Monash's Gippsland campus, where she is running the masters degree in techno-entrepreneurship. Former MHR for La Trobe (1972-75) and Streeton (1984-90) Anthony Lamb (PhC 1959, DipEd 1978) now manages a pharmacy in the ACT and hopes to undertake a PhD at Monash soon. Retired social worker Margaret Barnett (BA 1976, DipEd 1977, BSocWk 1985) writes that she would like to work with very young children in a learning/research situation. John Stephens (BEd 1972) has retired from the Catholic Education office in Adelaide and is now studying theology at Flinders University. Children's television program producer Noel Price (BA(Hons) 1970, DipEd 1971) and teacher Dorothy Price (BA 1971, DipEd1974) have both enjoyed careers in the education sector, working throughout Australia and overseas. Returning to Australia after four years in Belgium and the UK with BP Europe, Stuart Dack (BAppSc 1978) has been appointed marketing and technical manager with BP Australia. Catharine Dryden (BA 1972) has moved to Germany after spending five years in England as a freelance translator/interpreter. She would be delighted to hear from fellow alumni from the years 1968-72 at cdryden@t-online.de.

1980s

John Petersen (BA(Hons) 1987, MA 1993) was recently appointed head of Hyde Park Barracks Museum in Sydney, which is represented in the Australian Government's nomination of convict sites for the World Heritage list. Distinguished musician Ng Kah Ming (BE 1986) has been awarded a doctorate of music by the University of Oxford and has also released his ninth CD, The Sultan and the Phoenix, directing his ensemble Charivari Agréable. Shoba Purushothaman (BA 1986) is the co-founder and CEO of The NewsMarket, the world's first web-based PR distribution channel to deliver broadcast quality video to journalists around the world. Sheila Bellamy (MAAdmin 1982, BEd 1984) is professor and head of the School of Accounting and Law at RMIT University. Michael Cummins (BA 1987, MPPM 2001) is working for the Department of Transport and Regional Services administering regional assistance programs and community liaison. Simpson Poon (BSc 1988, GrapDipBusSys 1989, PhDComp 1998) has been appointed inaugural chair of information systems and acting sub-dean of IT at Charles Sturt University.

Firefighter Stephen Walls (BAppSci 1985) was awarded the 2002 Lord Mayor's Bushfire Appeal Churchill Fellowship.

Firefighter Stephen Walls (BAppSci 1985) was awarded the 2002 Lord Mayor's Bushfire Appeal Churchill Fellowship to study command and control training in the US and the UK, where he studied the latest techniques in training personnel to manage major incidents. He has since taken up a senior role with the CFA in Ballarat. Margaret Owen (BEc 1980) is undertaking a Bachelor of Business (Property) at the University of South Australia and reports she will soon become a valuer of residential and commercial property. Having completed a diploma of fine arts, Janette Oechsle (BEc 1985) recently held a solo exhibition titled Magnispectives. Engineer Michael Rigoni (BE 1983) has returned to Australia and is now working for Boeing Australia on a project for the RAAF. Belinda Scott (BA 1984) has recently compiled the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Visual Arts database, which details the biographies of 5500 Indigenous artists. Peter O'Reilly (BBus(Acc) 1984, GradDipBkg&Fin 1994) recently graduated as the inaugural graduand for RMIT's Master of Financial Planning, which he undertook while working as manager of Treasury Services at ANZ Banking Group. John Poon (BE w/hons 1989) describes his latest role overseeing the 'NEWater' study into advanced water reclamation in Singapore as the most exciting and influential engineering project he has worked on.

1990s

Chris Donald (MBA 1990) is working as a management consultant. Since completing his PhD at the University of Karlsruhe in Germany, Anthony Halog (MBA 1998) has relocated to Japan, where he is a postdoctoral research fellow at the National Institution of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. Kameswara Natakusumah (GrapDipBkg&Fin 1996, MBus(Bkg&Fin) 1998) has been working in the insurance industry in Indonesia since graduating and was recently appointed technical director of Fresnel Insurance Brokers. He hopes old Monash friends will contact him on kames@fresnel.co.id. Cecilia Hilder (BA(Hons) 1994) is now director of policy at the Melbourne office of the Australian Council for Infrastructure Development (AusCID). Sally Fearn (BBus(Mgt) 1994) has relocated to Wellington, New Zealand, taking up the position of communications and marketing manager with the Association of Polytechnics. Artist Jon Cattapan (MA 1994) recently held a major solo exhibition in Sydney at the Kaliman Gallery titled Figure: Ground. Eduard Sent (BCom 1997, LLB(Hons) 1999) is on his way to Stanford University to commence his MBA. Currently living in Texas, Divya Balachandran (BSc 1996, BBusSys 2000) is assistant vice-president at JP Morgan Chase. Sharif N. As-Saber (MBA (IntBus) 1994) completed a PhD at the University of Tasmania. He is now lecturing at Monash. Having returned to Australia after 10 years in London, where she completed a masters in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, Margaret Askew-Walinda (BA 1990) has set up a private practice in Geelong. Gavin Coote (BEc 1990) has spent the last 10 years working in the US and is currently vice-president, Mergers and Acquisition, for a software and services company in Chicago. Kynan Eng (BSc 1995, BE w/hons 1997) is undertaking a PhD specialising in neuro-informatics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and working on a public exhibit for the Swiss national exposition. Darren Platt (BSc(Hons) 1992, PhD Comp 1995) is working with biotech company Exelixis, based in California. Since graduation, Catherine Elfick (née Walker) (DipAppSci(Nurs) 1991) has travelled the world, managed her own backpackers hostel and is now living in Alabama with her Scottish husband. Rosemary Brice (BSpEd 1990) works in Kenya as an academic dean in a bible college and with HIV-positive children. David Kram (PhD Arts 1999) is heading a multinational opera project involving musicians from Australia, the US and Bulgaria, with whom he will record a new opera, The Inca's Chosen Bride. After being admitted to practice as a barrister at the Supreme Court of Victoria, Alec Tarshis (BEc 1992, LLB (hons) 1994) decided to change career path to management consulting. He now runs his own company, Reef Partners, in New York. Melanie O'Toole (BA 1993, GradCertMktg 2000) was recently a delegate to the APEC Women's Leaders Network held in Beijing.

2000s

Naomi Tsunematsu (PhD Arts 2001) is teaching Japanese at Monash's Berwick and Peninsula campuses. Julaihi Bujang (PhD Educ 2000) is divisional education officer for the Kuching Division of the Education Department. Chetan Ghuwalewala (GradDipIntBus 2001) is running his own export business in India. Ahmad R. Mustapha (BSc(Biotech) 2001) is a biotechnologist with Guthrie Biotech Laboratory (GBL) in Malaysia. Lukman Pura (MHlthSvcMgt 2001) has, since graduation, celebrated both the birth of a child and a promotion at work.

Staff

Lauchlan Chipman (former pro vice- chancellor (Gippsland) and deputy vice-chancellor 1993-96) retired last year after completing a five-year term as vice-chancellor and president of Central Queensland University (CQU). He is now chair of the Global Governance Board of the Global Assessment Certificate, a new qualification delivered to students from all cultural backgrounds who wish to study at an English-language university.
