Global alumni update

AUIAC 2002

The Australian Universities International Alumni Convention, hosted in Melbourne in September, was a great success. Arising from the vision of a group of Malaysian graduates to enhance international links among graduates of Australian universities, the convention attracted more than 600 delegates from more than 15 countries, with Monash represented by graduates from Australia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, India, Korea and Cambodia. Look out for news of the next convention, to be held in Hong Kong in 2004.

Pharmacy

The Victorian College of Pharmacy alumni program continues to thrive around the globe. Pharmacy dean Professor Colin Chapman recently hosted the college's second international alumni reception at London's Pharmacy Bar and Restaurant. Reunions have also been held for the 1970-72 classes, and a golden jubilee celebration was held for pharmacists who commenced at the college in 1952. Further reunions are planned for the second half of 2003, and an alumni cricket team will be out to beat their counterparts from the University of Sydney in April 2003. Law

The Law School continues to develop a range of opportunities for alumni to remain in touch. The second annual Monash Law Alumni Costello Lecture was delivered in October by Justice Ray Finkelstein (BJuris 1968, LLB 1970). The Monash Law Alumni Mentor Scheme, a joint initiative of the school and the Law Students' Society (LSS), was launched in June by Ian Pyman, chairman of the Monash Law Alumni Advisory Group and LSS president Anna Brown, and events have recently been held for law graduates in Singapore and Malaysia. An email newsletter featuring items of interest to law graduates in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia has been introduced, which will be expanded to include other countries in the future. To stay connected with the Law School, contact isabelle.droulers@law.monash.edu.au.

Science

The Monash Science Society sends its thanks to alumni who agreed to be listed as mentors in its 2002 career directory. The faculty is keen to hear from science graduates who are willing to advise and mentor current and prospective students. For more information, contact associate dean (external) and faculty executive officer Dr Kristina Macrae at kristina.macrae@sci.monash.edu.au.

Malaysia

The second group of graduates - the first in engineering and communications - from Monash's Malaysia campus received their degrees in September. More than 700 graduating students, family members and alumni attended a celebratory dinner to mark the occasion. To stay informed of events for alumni held by the campus, email ivy.cheong@adm.monash.edu.my or visit www.monash.edu.my/alumni.

Environment

The Monash Environmental Alumni group (MEA) was launched in October. MEA aims to draw together graduates with an environmental focus from all areas of Monash and create a formal framework for strategic alliances between graduates, government, industry and community organisations.
