Monash University and Arts Victoria have joined forces to fund the development of the new Malthouse Plaza on land adjacent to the Malthouse Theatre, following completion of the City Link excavations.
The plaza will house workshop and rehearsal facilities for Playbox Theatre, which is housed at the existing facility, and Melbourne's new dance company Chunky Move. In addition, a major purpose-built gallery will be created as a new home for the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA). Monash has been a major supporter of both Playbox and ACCA for several years.
Since its earliest days, ACCA has been located in a small cottage tucked away in the grounds of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne. The inconvenient location and the cramped conditions have prompted ACCA's search for a new home.
The plaza, which is expected to be completed next year, will be fully operational by the year 2000. Melbourne architects Wood Marsh and Pels Innes Neilson Kosloff have been awarded the contract to design the Malthouse Plaza.
