Synopsis

Overview of women and children's health in resource poor settings with a life cycle approach. Includes health status of women and children and policy trends; analysis of determinants of women and children's health in poor communities; intorduction of concepts in planning, implementation, management and evaluation of effective strategies; gender analysis; reproductive health; maternal and neonatal health; children's rights and healthy ageing.

Outcomes

On completion of this unit students, will be able to:

1. Understand the place of women's and children's health on the international health agenda, and influences on policy development;
2. To increase knowledge and understanding of the determinants of women's and children's health in low income settings
3. To understand the evidence base for effective interventions for women's and children's health problems and service delivery issues.
4. Explain policy trends in relation to women's and children's health in resource poor settings;
5. Identify the essential elements of effective strategies to promote women's and children's health in resource poor settings.

Written assignments (40%)
Group Presentation (20%)
Short answer examination (40% ).
