Synopsis
The principles, concepts, organisms and techniques of genetics are covered in this unit. Topics include: patterns of inheritance; structure and organisation of genes, chromosomes and genomes; gene regulation, mutation and gene function; relationship of genotype to phenotype; genetic linkage and gene mapping; chromosome variation and its role in both evolution and human disease. Examples are drawn from a range of organisms, including humans.
Outcomes
On completion of this unit students will:
- Understand the central role of genes in the inheritance of traits, and be able to explain both the fundamental principles of Mendelian inheritance as well as the complex variations seen in these patterns due to interaction of genes with each other and with the environment.
- Be able to describe what genes are, how they are regulated, how they control phenotypes, and how they can be altered by mutation.
- Be able to describe the common chromosomal and molecular mechanisms that underlie inheritance and understand the structure of DNA, genes and chromosomes.
- Have encountered the range of diverse organisms used in studying genetics and understand their common and unique features for the purpose of studying genetics (organisms include viruses, bacteria, fungi, plants, invertebrates and vertebrates, including humans).
- Have developed an awareness of the relevance and value of genetics to human society.
- Have developed skills in data collection, data analysis and data organisation necessary in the preparation and presentation of scientific reports.
- Have developed problem-solving skills, including the use of simple statistical concepts for data analysis and interpretation.
- Have mastered basic laboratory techniques, learnt the value of working with peers as part of a team and appreciate the principles underlying experimental design.

Practical work (practical reports, mapping project, mid-semester and end-of-semester tests): 45%
