Sporting and fitness facilities

Students at Sunway and Monash South Africa should contact their student associations regarding sports clubs and facilities available. In addition, at Monash South Africa a variety of sports are on offer including rugby, soccer, action cricket, tennis, table tennis, netball, pool and chess. Monash South Africa also recently opened a gym on campus. A sports officer is in charge of developing sport on the campus. The sports office is situated in the Campus Centre and Learning Commons building; telephone +27 11 950 4007.

Monash Sport

Students on Australian campuses

Monash Sport offers a wide range of active opportunities for students. With quality facilities and programs, Monash Sport caters for all levels, from fitness to social sport, across campuses.

Equipment, facilities and other resources are also available for hire*. Details of Monash Sport facilities and services are outlined below.

    * The information desk on your campus may also have some sporting goods and other items for hire, or borrow. Student-run sporting clubs may also be able to assist with equipment or other items - contact your student association for more information.

Aquatic centres

Clayton

Doug Ellis Swimming Pool

Facilities at the centre include a 20-metre free-form leisure pool and two six-lane, 25-metre pools (one has a moving floor that can alter the depth of the water), a sauna, a spa, a steam room, family change rooms and school change rooms.

The centre, which is also open to the public, offers Learn to Swim programs for children and adults of all abilities, squad training, high-performance swimming and school programs.

Also available is lap and recreational swimming, water and canoe polo, underwater hockey and triathlon preparation. It also caters for children's birthday parties, and facilities include an inflatable slide. Enthusiastic swimmers may wish to join one of the many clubs operating at the centre.

Athlete support

The Monash Elite Student Athlete Support Program is a structured program within Monash University that encourages and supports athletes, enabling them to undertake higher education while continuing to train and participate in sport at an elite level. The program operates at all Monash's Australian campuses and is strongly endorsed by the Vice-Chancellor and the deans of the University's 10 faculties.

In recognition of the fact that combining sport at an elite level with academic studies is highly challenging, the program provides strong personalised support to identified Monash elite student athletes.

Fitness centres and gymnasiums

Caulfield

Located on level 1 of building S, the Caulfield Fitness Centre includes a range of pin-loaded and free weight options and a cardio area, as well as plenty of stretching and Fitt ball space. The group fitness program consists of spinning, aerobics, yoga, Powersculpt (bar classes) and Fitt ball classes.

Clayton

The climate-controlled Clayton Fitness Centre spans over two levels. It is fully equipped with a comprehensive range of pin-loaded equipment, free weights and a cardio zone and theatre. The centre is supervised by a team of qualified and experienced staff willing to help you achieve your fitness goals. An extensive range of group fitness classes are offered to both casual users and members, including BodyPump, BodyCombat, NRG, Step, Tae-Box, Circuit, Pilates, yoga and spinning. Over 40 classes run every week, and cater for beginner to advanced levels.

Peninsula

The Peninsula Fitness Centre offers a fully-equipped gymnasium, including a range of pin-loaded and free weight options and a cardio area, as well as plenty of stretching and fit ball space. The centre is supervised by a team of qualified and experienced staff willing to help you achieve your fitness goals. The centre is open every day and is located on the lower level of building U. A range of classes from spinning and aerobics to yoga and gentle stretching is available to both members and casual users. Come and see what we have to offer.

Indoor games facilities

Monash Sport manages a number of indoor facilities across all campuses. Facilities include badminton, squash, table tennis, indoor cricket, indoor soccer, basketball and more. Group bookings can also be made to host sporting events, meetings and conferences. Individuals and groups can hire out the facilities for a single booking or on a regular basis. Court hire and group bookings are available for use by Monash students, staff and the general community.

Caulfield

Chisholm Hall

Chisholm Hall is a multipurpose hall used by many of the sporting clubs on campus, and is also available for hire for other sports activities or functions. The hall is able to be configured for badminton, volleyball, netball, basketball, futsal and indoor cricket. Social sports programs are conducted most lunch times during semester.

Clayton

Monash Sport casual court hire is available seven days a week for a range of sports across the Monash Clayton campus. Bookings and court availability will vary, so please check the website or phone +61 3 9905 4102 or go to http://sport.monash.edu.au/venues/casual-court-hire.html

Peninsula

B Building Sports Hall

B Building Sport Hall is a multipurpose hall used by many of the sporting clubs on campus, and is also available for hire for other sports activities or functions. The hall is able to be configured for badminton, volleyball, netball, basketball, futsal and indoor cricket. Social sports programs are conducted at lunchtime and in the evening during semester.

Inter-university sport

Monash offers students a wide range of opportunities for participating in inter-university sport, many of which are offered through Australian University Sport - the parent body of university sporting associations. Monash teams and individuals compete against other southern universities to qualify for the Australian University Games, or at the Australian University Championships. Participating in inter-university sport can provide some of the most rewarding experiences that uni life can offer. Monash Sport also run the Monash Metro games annually in July, this is a inter campus event for Monash students and staff to get involved with the emphasis on participation and having fun.

Caulfield

Tennis courts

Monash Sport manages the East Caulfield Reserve Public Tennis Courts, beside the Caulfield campus on behalf of the Glen Eira City Council. Courts can be booked through the Monash Sport Caulfield Fitness Centre or by telephone on +61 3 9903 2358.

Clayton

The Clayton campus offers 12 floodlit plexi-pave tennis courts, a full-size floodlit synthetic water-based hockey pitch, three football/cricket grounds including three turf wickets, four soccer grounds, a baseball field and a beach volleyball court. Gippsland

Golf course

Monash at Gippsland has a community golf course adjoining the campus. Membership and casual green fees are reasonably priced. Contact MUGSU's Sport and Recreation Officer for more information on +61 3 5122 6221.

Peninsula

Hockey pitch

The Peninsula campus has a new state-of-the-art synthetic hockey pitch that is available for use by all students. If hockey is not your game, drop in to Monash Sport to hire yourself other sporting equipment. For further information about getting involved in the local hockey scene, contact +61 3 9904 4496.

Skiing

Monash University Alpine Lodge

The Monash University Alpine Lodge at Mt Buller offers comfortable and affordable accommodation in a great location. Located only 300 metres from the ticket office and chairlifts, the fully self contained lodge is managed all year round and offers good quality facilities in a friendly atmosphere. The Monash University Alpine Lodge is available to Monash Staff, students and the general community for you to enjoy all year round.

Social sport

Caulfield

Clayton

Peninsula

Monash Sport at Peninsula run sporting competitions ranging from indoor soccer and basketball to rock climbing and AFL handball competitions. For more information, contact +61 3 9904 4217.

Sports clubs

Monash has over 70 affiliated sporting clubs across all campuses covering instructional, recreational and competitive sports. The sporting clubs cater to all levels from beginner to elite and are open to all Monash students, staff and the community. TeamMONASHTM Community Fitness Events

Monash has a world-wide community of over 250,000 members. Each year the University participates in a number of major local and international community sporting events. TeamMONASHª is a group of people from the broader Monash community including students, staff, and alumi, and their friends and families who represent the University at these events.

By participating or volunteering with TeamMONASHª have the opportunity to meet new people, experience new things, challenge yourself, have fun, learn more about the community you live in, increase your fitness level, and spend more time with friends and family.
