On the day of your exam

Admission to and exit from examination venues

Candidates are admitted to venues several minutes prior to examination starting times. All Monash University examinations have a standard 10 minute reading/settling period unless otherwise stated.

After entering an examination venue, you will not be permitted to leave until one hour after the scheduled start of the exam, nor will you be permitted to leave in the last 10 minutes. If you enter an examination venue on the wrong day or at the wrong time, you will be required to remain in that venue for one hour after the scheduled start time of the exam.

You will not be admitted to an examination if you arrive more than one hour after the scheduled start time of the exam. Extra time will not be granted to any student who does not present for an examination at the correct time and place.

Materials allowed in examination venues

Your Monash student ID card must be brought to each examination and displayed prominently on your desk. You are permitted to bring personal items and study material into the venue, provided they are placed in a closed bag under your desk.

You should ascertain from your lecturer in advance what material will be authorised for your exam(s). During an exam, you must not have in your possession any book, notes, paper, calculator, pencil case, mobile phone or other material/item which has not been authorised for the exam or specifically permitted. Any material or item on your desk, chair or person will be deemed to be in your possession. You are reminded that possession of unauthorised materials in an exam is a discipline offence under Statute 4.1.

Use of English dictionaries and calculators

Specific faculty rules

Faculty of Business and Economics

Unless specified to be used in an open-book examination, English dictionaries are not permitted to be used by students sitting an examination for faculty units. As English is the language of instruction within Monash University, foreign language dictionaries are also not permitted in examinations. Where restrictions apply to the use of calculators in examinations, the faculty has nominated the only calculators that are permitted, and these will be specified in the unit outline. It is the responsibility of each student to ensure they are familiar with any restrictions applying to the use of calculators in examinations for units they are studying.

Victorian College of Pharmacy

Non-programmable electronic calculators may be used in examinations; however no claim for special consideration on the grounds of calculator breakdowns will be accepted. The only electronic calculators permitted to be taken into and used in examinations are basic arithmetic calculators or simple scientific calculators with standard mathematical and statistical functions. Calculators, mobile phones or electronic diaries that are programmable and have a graphics capability or text storage facility are not permitted to be taken into examinations.

  • Most exams allow 10 minutes for reading the exam paper. You are not permitted to write during this time.
  • You must have your Monash ID card with you and display it on your desk during the exam
  • Only authorised materials are permitted during the exam - any material or item on your desk, chair or person will be deemed to be in your possession. Any personal items and study material you have with you must be in a closed bag under your desk.

  • You must not communicate with other students during the exam.
  • A warning will be given ten minutes before the end of the examination and an instruction to cease writing will also be given. You must remain seated at the end of the exam until instructed to leave.
  • Answers must be numbered and cover pages completed during the time allowed for writing, and you must stop writing immediately when instructed to by the invigilator. Follow all instructions given by invigilators.
