This policy ensures that a uniform grading scale for the evaluation of assessments for units and courses is used throughout the University. The grading scale applies to coursework units and Honours coursework degrees.
A summary of the scale and specific faculty information about the NP grade is outlined below.
Below are the coursework unit grading and marks used by Monash University (honours students should refer to the honours information below):
The Faculty in which a student is enrolled for his or her degree has the right to make judgements regarding the use of NP grades in allowing progress in the degree.
Faculty of Business and Economics
Students enrolled in undergraduate courses managed by the faculty who fail a unit with a mark between 45-49 per cent, which is confirmed to be the last unit necessary to complete a course of study, will be given a Near Pass (NP) in that unit provided they have completed all the work for the unit, and have sat the final examination. For more information visit http://www.buseco.monash.edu.au.secretariat/policies/near-pass-fb-0507.html
Faculty of Engineering
A grade of NP may be awarded for a unit in which a mark in the range 45-49 per cent has been obtained. Otherwise a grade of N will be awarded.
For the purposes of academic progression, students are awarded the prescribed credit points for the completion of a unit with a near pass grade. Students are also deemed to have met the prerequisite and/or corequisite requirements of a unit for which a near pass has been awarded. However, where a department believes that a near pass in a designated unit provides an inadequate academic preparation for progressing to a further unit for which a pass in the designated unit is a prerequisite, the department may, with the approval of the Faculty Board, prescribe that a pass or better must be obtained in the designated unit before progressing to the further unit.
Four-year, single-degree programs and the Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Technology (Aerospace)
A grade of NP may be awarded for no more than two engineering units at levels one and two to a maximum of 12 credit points, with only six of the 12 points permitted at level two. Otherwise, a grade of N (fail) will be awarded. No NPs will be awarded for any units at any later years.
Double-degree programs with the faculties of Art and Design, Arts, Business and Economics, Law, and Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences
In the engineering component of the double degree, a grade of NP may be awarded for no more than two engineering units at levels one and two to a maximum of 12 credit points, with only six of the 12 points permitted at level two. In the other component of the double degree, the policy of the associated faculty applies.
Double-degree programs with the Faculty of Science
A grade of NP may be awarded for no more than one science unit and one engineering unit to a maximum of 12 credit points at level one and one engineering unit to a maximum of 6 credit points at level two.
Double-degree program with the Victorian College of Pharmacy
In the engineering component of the double degree, a grade of NP may be awarded for no more than two level one or two coded engineering units to a maximum of 12 credit points, with only six of the 12 points permitted as a level two coded engineering unit. In the pharmacy component of the double degree, the policy of that faculty applies.
Bachelor of Technology programs
A grade of NP may be awarded for no more than two units (at level one or level two) to a maximum of 12 credit points.
Graduate, postgraduate and non-award programs
No NP grades may be awarded to students enrolled in graduate certificate, graduate diplomas, postgraduate diploma, masters by coursework, single unit, cross-institutional, exchange or study abroad programs.
Faculty of Information Technology
A candidate, for the purposes of qualifying for an undergraduate degree, can count up to 24 points of NP grades provided that:
(a) a maximum of 12 points of NP grades can be counted for any one year
(b) where a candidate obtains an NP grade for a unit and subsequently obtains a higher grade for that unit, the NP grade is not included in the count of points for qualifying purposes.
Faculty of Science
A near pass (NP) grade is a transition measure to help students with the adjustment to tertiary study. To be eligible for an NP grade, students must obtain a result of 45-49 per cent. A near pass grade means that the student will be deemed to have passed this unit.
Students in all science single-degree courses are entitled to count a maximum of two NP grades towards their degrees in their first year of tertiary study only. NPs awarded to students in other than their first year of tertiary study will be converted to fail grades. Where a student obtains a result of 45-49 in more than two units, the Board of Examiners will determine which will be assigned an NP grade.
As NP grades are a University transition measure, they will not be awarded to students who have previously completed tertiary studies.
Students in all science double-degree courses, including those managed by other faculties, will be permitted a maximum of one NP grade for a science unit in the first year of tertiary study only.
Students whose first enrolment in a Monash undergraduate science degree was prior to 1999 may be awarded a grade of NP for a maximum of 24 points throughout the course of their degree, with no more than 12 points to be counted at level three.
