Special types of enrolment

Non-award course enrolment

A non-award course is an academic course of study of varying length, normally not more than the equivalent of one semester (full-time), approved by a faculty. Non-award courses are normally designed to meet the needs of specific clients, external to the University including the profession, industry and the community. The course of study may include subjects units approved by education committee and endorsed by Academic Board that are normally taken as part of award courses, and may result in articulation into award programs.

Non-award courses are separate to and exclusive of `awards of the University' which are approved by Council and have the University's seal on the testamur.

Further information

Non-award single unit enrolment (not studying a full course)

Non-award single units are units which are taken in addition to, or separate from, the courses offered by the faculty. You may be permitted to enrol in a non-award single unit on a full-fee basis. Applications for a non-award single unit must be made by submitting an `Application for single unit enrolment' form, available from faculty offices or the Student Service Centres. Applications should be returned to your faculty office by the closing date for each semester.

See your faculty course advisor to find out what permission you need to undertake units which do not form part of your normal course structure. Permission to enrol in a non-award single unit will only be considered for specific units and an offer to enrol will be made for one semester only (unless the unit is for the full year).

Study at another institution (`cross-institutional study') (Students on Australian campuses)

Study at another Australian institution

If you are a student at Monash University in Australia* and wish to enrol in a unit at another tertiary institution for credit towards your Monash award**, you must complete an `Application for complementary unit enrolment' form, which should be obtained from and returned to your faculty office. If your application is approved, contact your faculty office so that communication between the two institutions can be established.

If you are admitted, you must enrol at both institutions. You will incur unit fees for each unit undertaken at the institution at which the unit is taught. Your host institution will decide if you will be allowed to study the unit as a CSP or full fee student. If you are granted CSP for the unit at the host institution you will need to complete a CSP form. You will be required to pay any other non-tuition fees at your home institution only. Any other course fees for which you are liable will also be assessed by the institution at which the unit is taught.

You must request a formal academic transcript from the other institution and supply your results to your Monash home faculty so that due credit for your studies at the other institution is awarded. This credit will appear on your Monash University transcript.

Study at an overseas institution

Monash students may be eligible to study part of their course at an overseas institution via an exchange or study abroad arrangement (see section 1).

    * Students at the Sunway campus should contact their schools for details about any cross-institutional study opportunities. Students at Monash South Africa should contact Student Services.

** In the Faculty of Business and Economics, students will not be given approval to take units solely for the purpose of accelerated course progression nor can they replicate units available at Monash, or substitute for Monash units.

Enrolling in more than one course at the same time

Normally you only enrol in one course at a time, however some faculties and situations allow enrolment in more that one course. Common examples include a single degree in the Faculty of Arts in combination with a Bachelor of Laws, or a bachelors degree in combination with a Diploma of Languages. Contact your faculty for more information on this type of enrolment.

Specific faculty rules

Concurrent enrolment for PhD candidates in the Faculty of Arts

Normally, a full-time candidate for a higher degree in the Faculty of Arts will not be permitted to enrol concurrently in another course at Monash or another university or tertiary institution. However, in exceptional cases, individual applications for concurrent part-time candidature may be considered by the faculty. Any such requests must be made in writing, clearly setting out the reasons why you are seeking to undertake concurrent studies in more than one degree.

Special procedures for summer semester enrolment

Summer semester is offered by most faculties over a variety of dates, usually from October (Sunway campus)/November (Australian campuses) to February. Specific unit offerings, enrolment closing dates and fee arrangements are generally available from mid-August (Australian campuses) and September/October (Sunway campus) each year.

To enrol in a summer semester unit, you must complete an `Enrolment amendment' form, available at the relevant summer semester website, faculty office or Student Service Centre. Discontinuation dates for summer semester vary widely but fall early within the period the unit is offered, so it is advisable that you make contact with the faculty as soon as possible if you are considering discontinuing a unit.

You will receive your summer semester `Enrolment details and fee statement' in either November, December or January, depending on the offering of the enrolled unit.
