The Student Resource Guide is published as a companion to the Undergraduate handbook and Postgraduate Handbook. Together, these publications set out the information you need to make the most of your educational opportunities. The Student Resource Guide includes everything you need to know about your rights and responsibilities as a student, as well as information about the facilities, services and student associations available at each of the University's campuses. It also explains university policy and decision-making processes, including those which students can access to ensure their interests are represented. It is your responsibility to become thoroughly conversant with the University's rules and regulations published in the Student Resource Guide, as well as any additional information specific to your chosen course published in the relevant course and unit Handbooks. All Monash departments operate on the assumption that you have this knowledge. Monash aims to give its students a challenging educational experience, one that paves the way for tomorrow's generation of innovators and leaders who seek to make a difference to the communities in which they live and work. CampusesMonash in AustraliaMonash has six campuses in Australia - Berwick, Caulfield, Clayton, Gippsland, Peninsula, Parkville, and also operates from two locations in the Melbourne CBD - the Melbourne City Office and the Monash University Law Chambers. Monash also has additional teaching sites for Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at the Alfred Hospital, Bentleigh, Box Hill Hospital, Cabrini Hospital Malvern, Dandenong Hospital, Frankston Hospital, Maroondah Hospital, Mildura, Monash Medical Centre, Peninsula Hospital and Sandringham Hospital. Monash internationallyMonash has two overseas campuses - Sunway campus, Malaysia and Monash South Africa, and a centre in Europe in Prato. Monash is also a participating institution in the Group of Eight universities' Australia Centre Europe, based in Berlin. Monash also has many associations with overseas universities and other institutions through the activities of its faculties, schools and centres, and via study exchange programs (see section 1.2) Monash South AfricaEstablished in 2001, the 100 hectare Monash South Africa campus is situated at Ruimsig, 20 kilometres northwest of central Johannesburg in the Gauteng Province. Students enjoy the benefits of small classes, a peaceful and secure campus and access to a learning environment of an international standard. The first intake of students graduated in 2003. Monash South Africa currently offers undergraduate degree courses in the schools of Arts, Business and Economics, and Information Technology. Honours courses are offered by the School of Arts in psychology, geography and environmental science, communications and media studies and international studies, and the School of Information Technology in computing and business systems. On-campus and local community facilities provide students with access to a range of educational, accommodation and leisure services. A number of Monash sporting teams participate competitively, and there are shopping centres and numerous local sporting clubs in the area, as well as a golf course. The Monash South Africa Student Association provides a platform for the student voice and is laying the foundations of the social aspect of university life on campus. A student newspaper, student clubs and societies and sporting opportunities are just some of the many facilities that the Student Association is focused on developing. SunwayEstablished in 1998 at the invitation of the Malaysian Government, Monash University Sunway campus operates as a self-funding private university within the Malaysian higher education sector. As the first Monash campus outside of Australia, Sunway is a key element in the Monash 2025 vision of becoming a global university with a network of campuses and study centres around the world. Sunway also supports the Malaysian Government's vision of Malaysia as a fully developed economy by 2020, and of becoming a regional centre of excellence for education. Monash in Australia has welcomed students from Malaysia over many years and was an early participant in the Colombo Plan, under which students from a number of countries including Malaysia were awarded scholarships to study in Australia. Monash therefore has a long tradition of teaching Malaysian students and has many distinguished alumni in Malaysia and in neighbouring countries. The campus offers undergraduate courses in arts, business and economics, engineering, information technology, science and medicine, as well as a range of postgraduate programs. Student enrolments have grown steadily, with more than 3300 students undertaking various courses at the campus in 2007. Although most students are Malaysian residents, Sunway campus has close to 30 per cent international students from more than 40 different countries, including Indonesia, China, Sri Lanka, Singapore and the Middle East. The campus is located within the suburb of Bandar Sunway, which is a part of the growth corridor connecting the national capital, Kuala Lumpur, and the port city of Klang. It is about 30 kilometres from Putrajaya and Cyberjaya (Multimedia Super Corridor) and is convenient to the airport. There are good local facilities for sports and entertainment, plus a range of accommodation, shopping centres and restaurants. Student life at Sunway is enhanced by the Monash University Student Association, which coordinates the funding of clubs and societies, arranges a range of community and social events and acts as a communication channel between students and the campus administration. All students are encouraged to participate in and contribute to the extracurricular life of the campus and to vote in the annual Student Council elections. University structureEach faculty is headed by a dean, who chairs his or her faculty board and is responsible for overseeing academic and administrative affairs of the faculty. Within the faculties, specialist centres cater for the research interests of staff and undergraduate and postgraduate students. The strategy and resources committee is responsible for advising on aspects of University policy and management and is made up of deans and Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Academic Board is responsible for all academic matters and includes professors, the University librarian, the directors of some of the University's research and service centres and representatives elected by non-professorial teaching staff and students. The Vice-Chancellor chairs the strategy and resources committee and an elected president chairs the Academic Board. The University's supreme governing body is the University Council, whose membership is drawn from inside and outside the University, including students, staff and members of professional, commercial and industrial bodies. The Vice-Chancellor is the University's most senior administrative and academic member of staff. Student and staff numbersMore than 54,000 students study at Monash University, over 15 per cent of whom come from other countries, including China and Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Japan and the United States. Students are supported by about 7,000 academic and general staff. |
