Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences regulations



Graduate Diploma in Family Medicine


1. There shall be a Graduate Diploma in Family Medicine (GradDipFamMed) which shall be awarded in one grade only.

2. In these regulations:

'faculty board' means the faculty board of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences;

'the head' means the head of the Department of Community Medicine; and

'the diploma' means the Graduate Diploma in Family Medicine.

3. An applicant for admission to candidature shall apply in writing to the registrar.

4. An applicant for admission to candidature for the diploma shall:

have graduated with or qualified for the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of this university or of another university recognised by the Academic Board or have, in the opinion of the faculty board acting on the advice of the head, equivalent qualifications and experience.

5.1 Preference shall be given to applicants in clinical practice.

5.2
Special consideration shall be given to overseas applicants who are permanently residing in their own countries at the time application for admission to candidature is made.

6. Subject to Statute 6.2 - Exclusion for unsatisfactory progress, the faculty board may review the academic progress of a candidate and, after taking into account any recommendations from the head, and after giving the candidate an opportunity to be heard, may terminate the candidature on the grounds of unsatisfactory progress.

7. Except where the faculty board otherwise permits, the course of study for the graduate diploma must be undertaken by part-time candidature and must be completed in not less than two and one half and not more than three years.

8. A candidate shall complete two compulsory units and three elective units as follows:

1. Academic basis of general practice/family medicine

2. Research methods in family medicine


Elective units

1. Learning and teaching in family medicine

2. Computers in medicine

3.
Preventive care in clinical practice

4.
Electrocardiography skills

5.
Musculoskeletal medicine

6.
Issues in rural health

7.
Palliative care

8.
Clinical nutrition

9.
Occupational health and safety

10.
Sexually transmitted diseases

11. Other elective units will be developed from time to time.


9.
Assessment for the diploma shall be by course work, participation, formal examinations, and specified projects.

10. A candidate shall comply with these regulations as from time to time amended or remade provided that where the faculty board is of the opinion that any candidate for the diploma has been adversely affected by a change in these regulations since the candidate first enrolled as a candidate for the diploma, the faculty board may act to remove the adverse effects on the candidate by permitting him or her to qualify for the diploma under these regulations as if they were in force without the particular change or changes which adversely affected the candidate.
