Bachelor of Laws


1. The degree

The degree of Bachelor of Laws must be undertaken pursuant to these regulations and may be awarded as a pass degree or a degree with honours.


2. Interpretations

2.1 In these regulations, unless the contrary intention appears -

'candidate' means a candidate for the degree;

'course of study' means the course of study for the degree determined by or under these regulations;

'dean' means the dean of the faculty;

'degree' means the degree of Bachelor of Laws;

'faculty' means the Faculty of Law;

'faculty board' means the faculty board of the faculty;

'faculty information handout' means a faculty handbook or such other publication concerning the course of study, whether bound or loose leaf or on-line or in other electronic form, as the faculty board determines from time to time.

2.2 For the purpose of these regulations -

2.2.1 a candidate for a combined degree is a candidate undertaking the course of study concurrently or in combination with another award of the university; and

2.2.2 a candidate with a prior qualification is a candidate who, before commencing candidature, satisfactorily completed one or more years of the course of the study for a degree or diploma in another faculty or in another educational institution approved for the purpose by the dean or has other qualifications and experience deemed equivalent by the dean.


3. Course of study

3.1 The course of study for the degree comprises the subjects determined by the faculty board under this section.

3.2 The faculty board may from time to time determine the subjects, compulsory and elective, comprising the course of study and in relation to the subjects may determine any matter or thing including but not limited to -

3.2.1 timing, content and duration;

3.2.2 sequence;

3.2.3 candidate attendance and participation;

3.2.4 credit points;

3.2.5 assessment; and

3.2.6 satisfactory completion.

3.3 The faculty board may determine special requirements for or in relation to a course of study undertaken -

3.3.1 by a candidate with a prior qualification; and

3.3.2 by a candidate for combined degree.

3.4 The faculty board must cause a determination under this section to be published in a faculty information handout.


4. Approval of subjects

4.1 A candidate, in each year of the course of study, must obtain the approval of the dean for all subjects to be undertaken by the candidate in the particular year.

4.2 Credit will not be granted in respect of a subject undertaken without approval under this section.


5. Credit for equivalent work

5.1 A candidate who has completed work which the dean is satisfied is equivalent to or a satisfactory substitute for particular work in the candidate's course of study, may be granted credit in respect of the particular work.

5.2 Despite sub-section 5.1, a candidate must satisfactorily complete work in the course of study totalling at least 48 credit points, or such number of credit points, up to 72, as the dean determines in any particular case.

5.3 Except where the dean in any particular case otherwise determines, credit under subsection 5.1 must not be granted in respect of work completed more than ten years prior to admission to canditure.

5.4 Where credit is granted to a candidate under this section, the candidate must complete the course of study within the time specified by the dean.


6. Candidature

6.1 Subject to the regulations, candidature for the degree must be continuous.

6.2 A candidate may, with the approval of the dean, undertake candidature for all or part of the course of study as a part-time candidate.


7. Time limits

7.1 Except as otherwise provided in the regulations or where the dean in any particular case otherwise determines, the course of study must be completed in a minimum of two and a maximum of eight years or within the relevant time limits specified in subsection 7.2.

7.2 The course of study undertaken by -

7.2.1 a candidate with a prior qualification must be completed in a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 7 years; and

7.2.2 a candidate for a combined degree must be completed in a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 10 years.


8. Leave of absence

The dean may, from time to time, grant leave of absence to a candidate for a period not exceeding one year, provided that the leave does not extend the relevant time limits prescribed by section 7.


9. Single subject enrolment

The dean may, at his or her discretion and subject to any conditions specified, permit a person to enrol for a single subject in the course of study but credit will not be granted towards the degree unless the dean in any particular case otherwise determines.


10. Pass or honours degree

A candidate who satisfactorily completes the course of study qualifies for the degree, being the pass degree or the degree with honours as determined by the dean.


11. Changes in regulations and course of study requirements

11.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations and with the requirements concerning the course of study determined by the faculty board under these regulations, as in force or published from to time.

11.2 Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first enrolling for the degree, been unreasonably adversely affected by any change in the regulations or course of study requirements, the faculty board must permit the candidate to qualify for the degree under the regulations or course of study requirements in force or published at some time during candidature, provided the faculty board is satisfied that the work so required to be completed is equivalent in standard to that currently required to complete the course of study.
