Master of Information Systems


1. The degree

The degree of Master of Information Systems shall be awarded in one grade only.


2. Interpretation

In these regulations unless the contrary intention appears -

'candidate' means a candidate for the degree;

'course of study' means the total amount of work required to be completed to qualify for the degree;

'dean' means the dean of the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology or the dean's nominee;

'degree' means the degree of Master of Information Systems;

'faculty board' means the faculty board of the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology;

'faculty information handout' means the faculty handbook or such other publication whether in bound, loose leaf or electronic form concerning the course of study as the faculty board determines from time to time.


3. Admission to candidature

An applicant for admission to candidature must -

3.1.1
have qualified for -

3.1.1.1
the honours degree of Bachelor of Computing with a grading of H11A or higher; or

3.1.1.2
the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology or the Graduate Diploma in Information Systems with, in final year subjects, a grade average of Distinction or higher; or

3.1.2
have other qualifications and experience which in the opinion of the faculty board constitute a suitable preparation for the course of study.


Course of study

4. The course of study for the degree comprises the subjects determined by the faculty board under section 5.


5.1
The faculty board may determine from time to time the subjects comprising the course of study and in relation to any subject may determine any matter including, but not limited to, requirements concerning -

5.1.1
number, timing, duration and content;

5.1.2
subject combinations;

5.1.3
prerequisite and corequisite requirements for any subject;

5.1.4
attendance at lectures, tutorial classes and seminars;

5.1.5
examination or assessment; and

5.1.6
satisfactory completion.

5.2
In subsection 5.1 -

5.2.1
'corequisite' in relation to a given subject means a designated subject which is studied before or at the same time as the given subject and must be passed before the given subject can be counted towards the degree; and

5.2.2
'prerequisite' in relation to a given subject means a designated subject that must be passed before a candidate can enrol for the given subject.

5.3
The faculty board must cause to be published in a faculty information handout all matters determined under this section.

5.4
The faculty board may refuse admission to examination to a person who, in the opinion of the faculty board, has failed to comply with any determination under this section.


6. Time limits

6.1 Except where the faculty board in any particular case otherwise permits, a candidate must complete the course of study -

6.1.1
in the case of full-time candidature, in not less than 1 year or more than 2 years; and

6.1.2
in the case of part-time candidature, in not less than 2 years or more than 4 years.

6.2
A candidate may, with the approval of the dean, change from one type of candidature to the other, in which case the candidate shall complete the course of study within the period determined by the dean with reference to the periods specified in subsection 6.1.


7. Leave of absence

The dean may grant a candidate leave of absence for such periods and on such conditions as the dean determines.


8. Completion of course of study

8.1 After considering the performance of a candidate in all work required to be completed in the course of study, the faculty board may decide whether -

8.1.1
the candidate has satisfied the course of study requirements;

8.1.2
the candidate has failed to satisfy the course of study requirements; or

8.1.3
the candidate be permitted within a specified period to complete further specified work in the course of study.

8.2
A candidate who satisfies the course of study requirements qualifies for the award of the degree.


9. Reversion to Graduate Diploma in Information Systems

9.1 Where a candidate fails to satisfy the course of study requirements, the faculty board may, where in the opinion of the board it is appropriate to do so, grant the candidate a specified amount of credit in respect of the Graduate Diploma in Information Systems.

9.2
A grant of credit under subsection 9.1 may be made subject to the satisfactory completion of any work specified by the faculty board.

9.3
A candidate who has been granted credit under this section may -

9.3.1
at the direction of the faculty board, be admitted with that credit to candidature for the Graduate Diploma in Information Systems; or

9.3.2
be declared by the faculty board to have qualified for the award of the Graduate Diploma in Information Systems.

9.4
Where pursuant to paragraph 9.3.1 a candidate is admitted to candidature for the Graduate Diploma in Information Systems, the candidate shall complete the course of study for the Graduate Diploma within the time specified by the dean.


10. Changes in regulations and course of study requirements

10.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations and with the requirements concerning the course of study determined by the faculty board under section 5, as in force or published from time to time.

10.2
Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first enrolling for the degree, been unreasonably adversely affected by any change in the regulations or course of study requirements, the faculty board may permit the candidate to qualify for the degree under the regulations or course of study requirements in force or published at some time during candidature, provided the board is satisfied that the work so required to be completed is equivalent to that currently required to complete the course of study.
