Graduate diplomas in the Monash University College of Art and Design
1. The graduate diploma
There shall be -
1.1 a Graduate Diploma (Ceramic Design) (GradDip(CeramicDes));
1.2 a Graduate Diploma (Fine Art) (GradDip(FineArt)); and
1.3 a Graduate Diploma of Arts (Visual Arts) (GradDipArts(VisArts)).
2. Definitions
In these regulations and in the outline of studies, unless the contrary
intention appears -
'college' means the Monash University College of Art and Design;
'college board' means the college board of the college;
'course of study' means the subjects to be completed by a candidate to
qualify for a diploma;
'department' means the Department of Ceramic Design or the Department
of Fine Art;
'diploma' means the respective graduate diploma;
'director' means the director of the college; and
'head' means the head of the relevant department or, in the case of a
candidate enrolled in a course for the Graduate Diploma of Arts (Visual
Arts), the head of the Gippsland School of Arts.
3. Admission to candidature
An applicant for admission to candidature for the diploma shall -
3.1 have qualified at this university or an equivalent tertiary institution
for a degree which the college board considers to be a suitable preparation
for the proposed course of study; or
3.2 have qualified at another university or equivalent tertiary institution
for a diploma which the college board considers to be a suitable preparation
for the proposed course of study; or
3.3 have qualifications and experience which, in the opinion of the college
board, provides a suitable preparation for the candidate's proposed course
of study.
4. Time limits and course requirements
The time limits and course requirements for each diploma are specified
in the Schedule.
5. Approval of course
Before commencing a diploma course, a candidate shall have her or his
course of studies approved by the head.
6. Completion of course
6.1 A candidate shall complete such courses as are prescribed by the
college board and in the outline of courses.
6.2 A candidate shall complete such written and oral examinations and
other forms of assessment as prescribed by the college board.
6.3 The college board may review the academic progress of a candidate
and, after taking into account any recommendations from the director
and after giving the candidate an opportunity to be heard, may terminate
the candidature on the grounds of unsatisfactory performance.
7. Leave
of absence
The college board may grant a candidate leave of absence for such a
period and on such conditions as the college board may determine.
8.
Changes in regulations
8.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations
as in force from time to time.
8.2 Where the college board considers that a candidate has, since first
enrolling for a diploma, been unreasonably adversely affected by any
change in the regulations, the college board must permit the candidate
to qualify for the diploma under the regulations in force at some time
during candidature, provided the board is satisfied that the work so
required to be completed is equivalent in standard to that currently
required to compete the course of study.
Schedule
- Graduate Diploma (Ceramic Design)
1. Time limits
The course for the diploma shall be completed by a candidate in not
less than one academic year and, except when the college board permits
otherwise, in not more than a prescribed period after having been admitted
to candidature, such period being -
1.1 in the case of a full-time candidate, one year; or
1.2 in the case of a part-time candidate, two years; or
1.3 in the case where a candidate changes from one type of candidature
to the other, a period determined by the head, proportionately according
to the periods prescribed in the foregoing subsections.
2. No credits
for work done elsewhere
A candidate is not eligible for exemption from any subject in the diploma.
3. Course requirements
Applicants may undertake a program in one of the following areas - ceramic,
glass, concrete technology, ceramic technology, design for ceramics;
studio practice in clay, metal, glass; or architectural ceramics. For
details of admission to the course and award of qualification, refer
to information provided by the department.
Graduate Diploma (Fine Art)
1. Time limits
The course for the diploma shall be completed by a candidate in not
less than one academic year, and except when the college board permits
otherwise, in not more than a prescribed period after having been admitted
to candidature, such period being -
1.1 in the case of a full-time candidate, one year; or
1.2 in the case of a part-time candidate, two years; or
1.3 in the case where a candidate changes from one type of candidature
to the other, a period determined by the head, proportionately according
to the periods prescribed in the foregoing subsections.
2. No credits
for work done elsewhere
A candidate is not eligible for exemption from any subject in the diploma.
3. Course requirements

Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture and Tapestry or any combination
of these. For details of admission to the course and award of qualification,
refer to information provided by the department.
Graduate Diploma of
Arts (Visual Arts)
1. Time limits
The course for the diploma shall be completed by a candidate in not
less than one academic year, and except when the college board permits
otherwise, in not more than a prescribed period after having been admitted
to candidature, such period being -
1.1 in the case of a full-time candidate, one year; or
1.2 in the case of a part-time candidate, two years; or
1.3 in the case where a candidate changes from one type of candidature
to the other, a period determined by the head, proportionately according
to the periods prescribed in the foregoing subsections.
2. No credits
for work done elsewhere

The course for the diploma may be taken in either distance mode or internal
mode.
