Bachelor of Music
Part I - Introductory
1. The degree
There shall be:
1.1 a pass degree of Bachelor of Music (BMus);
1.2 an honours degree of Bachelor of Music (BMus (Hons)).
2. Definitions
In these regulations and in the outline of studies, the course of study
for the degree is set out in terms of disciplines, points, subjects and
levels, prerequisites and sequences. In these regulations and in the
outline of studies the following definitions shall apply except where
inconsistent with the context or subject matter.
2.1 'the faculty' means the Faculty of Arts.
2.2 'the faculty board' means the faculty board of the Faculty of Arts.
2.3 the 'board of studies' means the 'board of studies in music'.
2.4 'the dean' means the dean of the Faculty of Arts.
2.5 'the head' means the head of the Department of Music.
2.6 'degree' means the degree of Bachelor of Music.
2.7 'the pass degree' means the pass degree of Bachelor of Music.
2.8 'the honours degree' means the honours degree of Bachelor of Music.
2.9 'discipline' means one of the disciplines available to candidates
and specified in the schedules hereto and disciplines taught by departments
of the faculty and certain disciplines taught by other faculties.
2.10 'level' means one of the three levels in the course of study for
the pass degree, which shall be designated as first year level, second
year level and third year level. For the honours degree there shall be
an additional or fourth year level.
2.11 'subject' means a prescribed amount of work extending over not more
than one year at a certain level within a discipline within the faculty
or another faculty. In the numerical notation used for subjects in schedule
A to these regulations the first digit indicates the level, the second,
third and fourth digit the number of the subject within the discipline.
2.12 'prerequisite' means one or more specified subjects which shall
be completed before a candidate is permitted to proceed to the subject
for which they are a prerequisite.
2.13 Points -
2.13.1 A normal year's work for a full-time student for the pass degree
shall be valued at forty-eight points.
2.13.2 In disciplines taught by the departments of the Faculty of Arts,
all first year level subjects shall be valued at six points, second year
level subjects shall be valued at four or eight points and third year
level subjects shall be valued, according to their weight, at four, six,
eight or twelve points.
2.14 Sequences -
2.14.1 A first year sequence is a pair of first year level subjects specified
in the outline of studies as the first part of a major or minor sequence
in a discipline.
2.14.2 A minor sequence shall comprise two successive parts, being either
a first year sequence followed by a second part comprising second year
level subjects totalling at least sixteen points, or second year level
subjects totalling at least sixteen points, followed by a second part
comprising third year level subjects totalling at least twelve points.
2.14.3 A major sequence shall comprise three successive parts, the first
part being a first year sequence, the second part comprising second year
level subjects totalling at least sixteen points, and the third part
comprising third year level subjects totalling at least sixteen points,
provided that the second and third parts shall jointly total at least
forty points.
2.14.4 Permissible sequences in each discipline shall be set out in the
outline of studies, provided that the faculty board may, from time to
time, approve a special sequence.
3. Completion of a subject
To complete a subject a candidate after enrolling for the subject shall,
to the satisfaction of the chairman of the department concerned, attend
such lectures and tutorial classes and perform such exercises and pass
such examinations as may be prescribed in the outline of studies.

Effect of changes in regulations
A candidate shall comply with these regulations as from time to time
amended or remade provided that where the faculty board is of the opinion
that any candidate for the degree has been adversely affected by a change
in these regulations since the candidate first enrolled as a candidate
for the degree, the faculty board may act to remove the adverse effects
on the candidate by permitting him or her to qualify for the degree under
these regulations as if they were in force without the particular change
or changes which adversely affected the candidate.

Part II - The pass
degree
5. Qualifications required
A candidate for the pass degree shall qualify for the degree on the
recommendation of the board of studies in music upon complying with the
requirements of parts I and II and such parts of part IV of these regulations
as are applicable to the particular candidate.
6. Structure
6.1 The course of studies is to be made up of subjects listed in schedule
A to these regulations and schedules A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H to the
BA regulations to a total of at least 144 points and shall include:
6.1.1 a minimum of eight and a maximum of ten subjects taken at first
year level;
6.2 first year sequences in at least three different disciplines, including
at least two from schedule A to these regulations;
6.3 not more than two first year level subjects that do not form part
of a first year sequence; and
6.4 such additional subjects at the second and third year level as are
required to complete two major sequences schedule A to these regulations
of which:
6.4.1 one major sequence must be in music performance;
6.4.2 the other major sequence must be in musicology, ethnomusicology
or composition.
7. Time limits
7.1 The course shall be completed in not less than three years and,
except with the permission of the faculty board, in not more than eight
years, provided that if credit is given for work done outside the faculty,
the faculty board may determine the number of years within which the
course of study shall be completed.
7.2 The time limits specified in subsection 7.1 shall begin from the
date of admission to candidature.
7.3 Within the specified time limits, the course may be undertaken by
part-time study.
7.4 The dean may grant, on such conditions as he or she thinks fit, leave
of absence to any candidate provided that such leave of absence shall
not be deemed to constitute an extension of the time limits prescribed
by subsection 7.1.
8. Other limitations
8.1 Limit on work load -
Except with the permission
of the faculty board, a candidate shall not undertake in one semester:
8.1.1 more than four first year level subjects; or
8.1.2 any combination of subjects having a total value of more than thirty-two
points.
8.2 Entry to later years -
Except with the permission
of the faculty board:
8.2.1 a second year level subject shall not be undertaken until at least
two first year sequences have been completed.
8.2.2 A third year level subject shall not be undertaken until a minor
sequence in at least one discipline has been completed.
8.3 Prerequisites -
A prerequisite prescribed by these
regulations or in the outline of studies for a subject shall be completed
before a candidate may be permitted to enrol for the subject for which
it is a prerequisite.
8.4 Two failures in the same subject -
Except with the
approval of the board of studies in music, acting on the recommendation
of the head, a subject shall not be undertaken by a candidate who has
previously failed it twice.
9. Exemptions
The faculty board may, in circumstances it considers special, exempt
a candidate from any of the provisions of sections 6 and 8 provided that
the candidate is not thereby permitted to qualify for the degree with
a course of less weight than the course otherwise prescribed by these
regulations.
10. Approval of course
10.1 At the beginning of each semester, a candidate shall obtain the
approval of the faculty board for the selection of subjects to be undertaken
in that semester.
10.2 A candidate shall obtain the approval of the faculty board before
arranging any alteration to the course of study during the semester.
11. Grades of examination results
11.1 Examination results in first year level subjects shall be awarded
in six grades, namely, fail (NN), pass division II (P2), pass division
I (P1), credit (C), distinction (D) and high distinction (HD).
11.2.1 A pass division II may be awarded in a subject by the faculty
board after it has reviewed a candidate's performance in all subjects
attempted by the candidate.
11.2.2 Except with special permission of the faculty board:
11.2.2.1 not more than one subject in which a pass division II has been
awarded shall be counted towards the degree; and
11.2.2.2 a subject in which a pass division II has been awarded may not
be counted as a prerequisite nor as the first subject of a sequence.
11.3 The examination results of candidates in second and third year level
subjects shall be awarded in five grades, namely, fail (NN), pass (P),
credit (C), distinction (D) and high distinction (HD).

Part III The honours
degree
12. The honours degree
12.1 A candidate for the honours degree shall qualify for the degree
upon the recommendation of the board of studies in music, and complying
with parts I and III and such parts of parts II and IV of these regulations
as are applicable to the particular candidate.
13. Structure of the honours
course
13.1 The course of study for the honours degree shall be a minimum of
four years, of which the first three years levels shall be the same as
that of the pass degree.
13.2 Except as provided under subsection 17.2 the fourth year level of
the course shall be a full-time year's work at fourth year level in music.
14. Admission to honours candidature
On the recommendation of the head an applicant may be admitted to candidature
for the honours degree at fourth year level by the board of studies in
music provided that:
14.1 a major sequence has been completed in the subject area composition,
performance, musicology or ethnomusicology and credit grades have been
obtained in one of these subject areas to the value of sixteen points
at third year level at either second or third year level.
14.2 the applicant has satisfied all other requirements for the pass
degree except that an applicant may, with the permission of the board
of studies in music, take a subject or subjects valued at not more than
twelve points pursuant to section 15; and
14.3 the applicant has completed any additional second and/or third year
level subject or subjects with a value not exceeding sixteen points which
the board of studies in music, on the recommendation of the head, has
approved for candidates in the proposed honours discipline or disciplines.
15. Other work at fourth year level
A candidate enrolled for honours at the fourth year level shall not
pursue any other course or subject in the university except that a candidate
may be permitted by the board of studies in music, in circumstances it
considers special, to complete in addition to fourth year subjects in
the honours discipline or disciplines, a subject or subjects valued at
not more than twelve points.
16. Admission of a graduate
16.1 An applicant who has been admitted to the pass degree or who has
qualified for that degree may be admitted to candidature for the honours
degree by the board of studies in music on the recommendation of the
head provided that:
16.1.1 not more than five years have elapsed between the year in which
that applicant qualified for the degree of Bachelor of Music in this
or another university, or for a degree or diploma regarded as its equivalent
in another university or tertiary institution approved for the purpose
by the faculty, and the year in which admission to fourth year honours
is sought;
16.2 Subject to subsection 16.3, an applicant may be admitted to candidature
for the honours degree by the board of studies in music on the recommendation
of the head provided that:
16.2.1 not more than ten years have elapsed since the year in which the
applicant qualified for the degree of Bachelor of Music in this or another
university, or for a degree or diploma regarded as its equivalent in
another university or tertiary institution approved for the purpose by
the faculty, and subjects prescribed under subsection 16.3 and valued
normally at not less than forty-eight points have been completed; or
16.2.2 not more than ten years have elapsed between the year in which
that applicant qualified for a degree or diploma, not being the degree
of Bachelor of Music at this university or at another university or tertiary
institution recognised for the purpose by the faculty, and the requirements
of subsection 21.1 have been satisfied.
16.3 An applicant shall not be admitted to candidature pursuant to subsection
16.2 until the work prescribed by the faculty board to ensure the satisfaction
at the appropriate standard of the prerequisites for admission, and such
additional work as the faculty board may think necessary, have been completed.
16.4 An applicant seeking admission to candidature under this section
may, on the recommendation of the chairman or chairmen, be permitted
to enrol for subjects listed for the pass degree for the purpose of undertaking
such work as may be required to qualify for admission.
17. Time limits
17.1 A candidate proceeding by full-time study shall complete the fourth
year level of the course over a period of one year.
17.2 A candidate may be permitted by the head or heads to proceed by
part-time study, in which case:
17.2.1 the fourth year level of the course shall be completed in two
successive years.
18. Exemptions
The faculty board may exempt a candidate from any of the provisions
of sections 14, 15, 16 and 17 provided that the candidate is not thereby
permitted to qualify for the honours degree with a course of less weight
than otherwise prescribed by these regulations.
19. Grades in honours
subjects and courses
Honours may be awarded on completion of the fourth year level of the
honours degree. There shall be a class list comprising three classes
of honours, namely, class I, class II and class III and two divisions
in class II, namely, division A and division B. A candidate who fails
to be placed in the class list shall be awarded the grade of fail (NN).
Honours grades shall not be awarded for subjects taken as parts of the
fourth year.
20. Award of a pass degree to an honours candidate
20.1 Subsection 20 shall not apply to a candidate in relation to whom
section 16 is applied.
20.2 Candidates who have failed to be placed in the class list at the
final examinations in an honours discipline shall not, except with the
permission of the faculty board, present themselves at a subsequent final
examination at fourth year level in that discipline, but:
20.2.1 may be admitted to the pass degree upon completing such further
work as may be required to satisfy section 6.

Part IV General
21. The degree as a further qualification
21.1 The degree as a further undergraduate degree.A candidate who has
qualified for or graduated with one or more than one degree or diploma
in this or another university or tertiary institution approved by the
faculty, may be granted credit for not more than ninety-six points towards
the degree of Bachelor of Music and may be required to complete subjects
valued at a minimum of forty-eight points, provided that:
21.1.1 the subjects to be completed shall be approved by the board of
studies in music, shall include at least the third part of a major sequence
in one discipline and shall not to any significant extent cover the same
work as that completed for the other degree or diploma; and
21.1.2 in the case of a degree or diploma completed more than ten years
before admission to candidature, such credit shall be awarded at the
discretion of the board of studies in music.
22. Credit for work done
elsewhere
22.1 This section shall not apply to a candidate in relation to whom
the provisions of section 21 apply.
22.2 Limits on credit.Subject to subsections 22.3 and 22.4 the faculty
board may grant credit to a candidate for work completed in another faculty
of this or another university or tertiary educational institution approved
for the purpose of this section by the faculty, provided that:
22.2.1 the work completed outside the faculty is in disciplines recognised
for the purposes of credit by the faculty;
22.2.2 credit for work completed more than ten years before admission
to candidature shall be granted at the discretion of the board of studies
in music;
22.2.3 credit for work completed at another institution shall not exceed
ninety-six points.
22.3 Work to be done in this university. Notwithstanding
any credit granted to a candidate pursuant to paragraph
22.2.3 the candidate shall complete
the third part of a major sequence in one discipline and shall complete
any other subjects which the faculty board considers necessary to make
the candidate's course accord with the requirements of these regulations.
22.4 Credit towards degrees with honours. Notwithstanding
paragraph 22.2.3 and subsection 22.3, a student who in another tertiary
institution has completed the equivalent of three years' full-time work
for the degree of Bachelor of Music in this or another university or
for a degree or diploma regarded as its equivalent in another university
or tertiary institution approved for the purpose by the faculty board
may be granted credit towards the degree as the board of studies in music
may determine, provided that the student shall complete the equivalent
of at least one year of full-time work before becoming qualified for
the honours degree.
23. Permission to take work elsewhere
A candidate may gain credit towards the degree for work, other than
a subject specified in the schedules to these regulations, undertaken
and completed in another faculty of this or of another university or
tertiary educational institution approved for the purpose of this section
by the faculty provided that:
23.1 permission to undertake such work is granted by the board of studies
in music;
23.2 credit to the value of not more than ninety-six points may be gained
for such work; and
23.3 except for a candidate participating in an approved exchange scheme,
the candidate shall complete from among subjects specified in the said
schedules:
23.3.1 the third part of a major sequence in one discipline; or
23.3.2 work to the value of sixty-eight points including two minor sequences;
and
23.3.3 such other subjects as the board of studies in music specifies
are required to comply with these regulations.
