The purpose of this module is to develop a scope of knowledge of the main areas of the theory of single variable and multivariable calculus, namely differentiation and integration of one or more variable functions by means of first principles and otherwise, and to include an understanding of the key terms, concepts, facts, principles, rules and theories pertaining to single and multivariable variable calculus.
The learning goals associated with this unit are for students to understand the following concepts:
- functions and limits
- derivative, derivative as a function, higher derivatives
- application of differentiations: maximum and minimum values, graphs, limits at infinity, optimisation problems
- integrals: areas and distances, definite and indefinite integrals, fundamental theorems of calculus
- applications of integrations: areas between curves
- exponential functions and their derivatives
- techniques of integration
- differential equations
- infinite series and sequences
- partial derivatives
- multiple integrals
- advance linear algebra
Within semester assessment: 40% + Examination: 60%
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. The unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
