Hazard Identification (PHA, HAZOP, FMECA). Engineering Risk Management. Human Elements in Risk. Technical tools for Risk Engineers. Loss forecasting and prevention methods for fire, explosion, machine breakdown. Human element in engineering risk management. Modelling of accidents. Fault Tree Analysis (FTA). Even Tree Analysis (ETA). Industrial hazards and their risk assessment - Case studies. Emergency planning, documentation and management. Recent issues in risk engineering. Engineering risk management report writing and communication.
Assignment: 60%, Examination: 40%
Students are required to achieve at least 45% in the total continuous assessment component (assignments, tests, mid-semester exams, laboratory reports) and at least 45% in the final examination component and an overall mark of 50% to achieve a pass grade in the unit. Students failing to achieve this requirement will be given a maximum of 45% in the unit.
