This unit will build on students' previous learning about global health.
The intent of this unit is not only to further students' awareness of global health issues, but also to encourage critical thinking about the underlying causes, the efficacy of global health programs and the ethics of delivering aid.
It aims to equip students to work in the area of global health both in Australia and abroad.
The unit comprises three modules of study.
During the first, students will learn about the history of global health and Australian indigenous health, the main global health principles and will briefly review the main underlying causes of global health issues and Australian indigenous health issues.
They will also be introduced to human rights and ethics and how to apply them to health research and global health provision.
The second module will look at how to appropriately address continuing and future global health challenges in different settings.
Past successes and failures in addressing these challenges will be analysed to demonstrate the complexity of health improvement in low- and middle-income countries.
Students will learn about the use of appropriate technology, being culturally sensitive and participatory approaches.
In the third module students will study the changing scene in relation to 'development aid' with a particular focus on current shortfalls and ethical aspects of donor activity.
This module will also expose students to the various careers available to graduates with a health sciences background.
On successful completion of this unit students will:
- Explain the current and future threats to global health and their underlying causes
- Discuss the major human rights and ethical issues in the field of global health
- Analyse and critique programs addressing health issues at a national and global level including the program's capacity to address health inequities and the appropriateness of their design
- Critically analyse the relationships between various actors and agencies in global health
- Describe and critique the sustainable development goals
- Apply participatory techniques in the design of projects to address global health issues
- Essay (2,500 words) (40%) (Hurdle)
- Group presentation (oral 30 minutes) (20%)
- Research Assignment (2,500 words) (40%) (Hurdle)
Hurdle Requirement: 80% attendance at tutorials
3 contact hours plus 9 hours of private study per week.
