Professional recognition - Faculty of Education

Primary education and Secondary education specialisations

All specialisations for primary and secondary education are accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). They are also in line with the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers developed by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL). Graduates may seek registration with the VIT or the relevant regulatory authorities in other states and/or territories and/or overseas.

Any initial teacher education student due to complete their course between 1 July 2016 and 31 December 2019 are strongly encouraged to complete the National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students prior to graduation.

Any initial teacher education student who will complete their course on or after 1 January 2020 will be required to meet the AITSL teacher registration requirement of achieving the standard in the National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students prior to being course completed.

Registration with VIT is recognised by teacher regulatory authorities in all Australian jurisdictions; to teach interstate or overseas, graduates need to check registration requirements with local authorities.

Early years education specialisations

Specialisations in early years education are accredited by the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA). From 30 September 2015, graduates in early years education specialisations are required to register with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT)*.

* The early years education specialisations in the Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Early Years Education and the Master of Teaching in Early Years Education courses do not qualify graduates to teach in schools.
