Synopsis

In this unit you will explore the main issues associated with communication and critical thinking in organisations, and the factors affecting effectiveness in these areas in a workplace environment. The unit addresses interpersonal communication skills, and examines theory and practice with regard to maintaining effective interpersonal relationships. You will also learn how to improve clarity in thinking and communication by using critical thinking and reasoning skills, to enhance the persuasive quality of arguments required in business communication.

Outcomes

The learning goals associated with this unit are to:

  1. develop students core knowledge of the underpinnings of effective interpersonal communication and critical thinking
  2. broaden and advance students interpersonal communication skills, such as active listening, non-verbal communication, oral presentations, conflict resolution, and negotiation
  3. broaden and advance students critical thinking skills, such as decision making, structured thinking, and the evaluation of evidence and language
  4. guide students in an exploration of their communication and critical thinking strengths and weaknesses through reflective learning
  5. develop students ability to synthesise and apply learning to address complex organisational problems.

Workload requirements

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. The unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
