Synopsis

This is the third unit in a sequence of three units that builds students' knowledge, skills and attitudes relevant to the effective teaching and learning of primary school mathematics. The content focus is on the curriculum outcomes relevant to the statistics and probability strand at levels Foundation to Year 8. Students consolidate and synthesise their learning to critically reflect on activities and approaches for developing understanding, fluency, problem-solving and reasoning capacities associated with chance, data representation and data presentation. Students engage with research on how children learn and develop strategies for addressing more complex learning needs that involve differentiating the curriculum, setting challenging tasks for more able children and designing projects for promoting numeracy.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. plan for and manage the effective teaching of concepts and skills relating to statistics and probability
  2. confidently plan and facilitate a range of mathematics/numeracy learning activities which develop and enhance student understanding, fluency, problem solving and reasoning
  3. consider the needs of diverse groups of students (including students with different abilities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, refugee students, immigrant students and minority students) and employ strategies to facilitate their learning
  4. harness information and communication technologies (ICTs) (e.g. interactive whiteboards, tablet PCs, web 2.0) and calculators (e.g. graphics calculators, CAS) and related software as learning technologies in their teaching repertoire
  5. select and use a variety of assessment techniques to evaluate student learning in mathematics
  6. plan lessons involving challenging tasks, enabling prompts and extending prompts
  7. design and evaluate a numeracy project.

Workload requirements

Minimum total expected workload equals 12 hours per week comprising:

(a.) Contact hours for on-campus students:

  • 2 contact hours per week

(b.) Additional requirements

  • 10 hours of independent study per week
