Synopsis

This unit introduces a range of key feminist theories that are made contemporary through their application to the Asian context. Highly interdisciplinary in its concerns, the unit examines the application of feminist and queer theorising around important categories such as the relevance and contemporaneity of feminisms, fluidity of gender and sexual identities, non-conformity in the realm of sexualities, the impact of cultures and ethnicities on femininities and masculinities, agency and feminist praxis.

Outcomes

Students successfully completing this unit will have gained:

  1. A basic knowledge of a range of contemporary feminist theories of bodies and sexualities;
  2. Developed skills in reading and analysing theoretical texts;
  3. Enhanced ability to develop and sustain theoretical arguments;
  4. Enhanced skills in verbal and written communication.

Workload requirements

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
