Description

This Bachelor of Education (Honours) specialisation qualifies graduates to teach children from Foundation to Year 12 (five to 18 years of age) in both primary and secondary schools. In addition students complete a sequence of units in special education that equips them with the specialist knowledge and skills for working in inclusive and special education settings.

Requirements

Units are 6 credit points unless otherwise stated.

Education studies

Include a focus on building foundational knowledge and skills specific to educating young people and include learning and educational enquiry, child and adolescent development, classroom practice and inclusive education.

Curriculum studies

Focus on how primary school aged children learn and how they can be effectively and creatively taught in the key learning areas including English, mathematics, creative arts, technology, science, health and physical education, and social education. Curriculum studies also focus on learning and teaching in secondary schools.

Discipline studies

Provide the opportunity to deepen subject knowledge in special education and another discipline area and qualify graduates to teach in special education settings and one other learning area in secondary schools. Students choose a discipline from a wide range of disciplines including history, arts, science, mathematics, English, health, and information technology and computing.

Second discipline

Professional studies

Comprise professional experience and research units. Students engage in research, develop understanding of professional identity and leadership, and gain practical teaching experience by completing fieldwork and 85 days of supervised professional experience in primary schools, secondary schools and special education settings.
