Synopsis

This unit offers students an opportunity to undertake an extended supervised project associated with a partner organisation drawn from the private and public sectors. The internship offers students the opportunity to apply and consolidate the knowledge and professional skills they have acquired through their previous study. Prior to the start of semester students liaise with the course coordinator regarding identifying and approaching a suitable partner. The internship project is formulated in consultation with an appointed academic supervisor and the internship partner with whom students work for a minimum of 4 weeks. Note that written approval to enrol in this unit must be granted from the Master of International Development Program coordinator.

Outcomes

On successful completion of the internship students will have:

  1. Gained experience in a project which is of direct benefit to the interests of a client organization;
  2. Developed skills in project formulation, implementation, analysis and communication;
  3. Enhanced their capacity to evaluate development related policy and project work;
  4. Improved their ability for self-evaluation and ethical action in the context of development related professional engagement.

Assessment

Internship Journal (1000 words): 10%
Report (8000 words): 80%
Presentation: 10% (1000 word equivalence)

Workload requirements

One 2-hour workshop in week 1 of the semester. Subsequent hours to be negotiated between supervisor, student and host organisation to the equivalent of 24 hours per week.

Prerequisites

Students must complete APG5090 Contemporary issues in development practice, plus 12 points or core or elective units or the permission of the course coordinator. A minimum average of distinction or above across the completed program is required.
