Synopsis

Students will develop a sound understanding of the principles of pathology, and specifically that of the respiratory and osteoskeletal systems , along with their radiographic appearances. Students will also develop a sound understanding of the structural and functional relationships of the vertebral column and the bony thorax. They will be introduced to the nervous system and the innervation of muscles together with relevant radiographic anatomy.

Outcomes

On completion of this unit, a student will be able to:

  1. Describe the aetiology, pathology and sequelae of pathology in respect to cells, tissues and organs
  2. Identify the causes of neoplasia and state how neoplasia is staged and graded
  3. Compare and contrast the processes of acute and chronic inflammation
  4. Analyse the factors that determine the tissue repair process
  5. Describe the anatomical structures of the respiratory system including skeletal, musculature and nervous structures
  6. Identify the structural and functional relationships of the vertebral column and bony thorax and compare their appearances on radiographic images
  7. Describe principles of embryology and in particular, the development of the vertebral column and spinal cord
  8. Compare the process of ossification for the vertebral column and bony thorax with the stages of this process on radiographic images
  9. Describe pathological processes that occur in the respiratory system and osteoarticular skeleton and identify their radiographic representation
