Synopsis

This unit provides the student with enhanced understanding of the concepts related to undertaking research in the emergency and disaster setting though the examination of the Principles of Good Research Practice based on the 'Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research'. Relevant research studies undertaken in emergency services settings, both nationally and internationally, will be used as exemplars to promote contextual relevance to the topics covered in the unit. This unit will build on previous studies in introduction to research and evidence based practice.

Outcomes

On completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

  1. Identify the highlights of the literature profile of research in the emergency and disaster setting;
  2. Describe the process and convention requirements of research integrity & research project management within the principles of Good Research Practice and the application of these principles in the emergency and disaster setting;
  3. Identify potential barriers and possible solutions to the implementation of good research practice in the emergency and disaster setting;
  4. Identify ethical and privacy issues associated with undertaking research in the emergency and disaster setting;
  5. Critique research articles with respect to the strengths and limitations of design, methodology, use of statistical methods, data sources, relevance of the findings, and appropriateness of conclusions, and suggest modifications that would have improved the study;
  6. Apply these core concepts of responsible research practice and project management in designing a proposal for a collaborative disaster related research project;
  7. Source suitable avenues for research funding, collaboration and for the distribution of outcomes of emergency service research;
  8. Implement change in professional practice on the basis of good evidence.

156 hours including pre-reading, three day full time block release, post reading and assignments supported by online tutorials using MUSO.

Off-campus attendance requirements

Students are required to spend 12 hours per week on this unit working through self directed learning materials, participating in tutorials through MUSO and in preparation of unit assessment tasks (156 hours total).
