Synopsis

In this unit students select one of three research streams:

  1. 'Dissertation' in which students research, prepare and submit a formal 15,000-18,000 word thesis;
  2. 'Investigative Project / Dissertation', in which students submit a sustained piece of written argument, appropriately referenced, on an approved research topic, and also a short original work that explores by means of performance an aspect of the thesis topic; and
  3. 'Investigative Project', in which students develop a single performance or creative project together with a shorter written submission supporting the student's process and achievement in the project in the light of its defined objectives.

While the examinable outcomes vary, each stream demands a sustained and in-depth inquiry in response to articulated research questions.

Outcomes

  1. Acquired and demonstrated an appropriate level of expertise in the application of contemporary theoretical models in the study of theatre and performance processes to a specific research question.
  2. Gained knowledge and experience in the nature and practice of research methodology, and in the application of distinctive disciplinary models.
  3. Developed skills in the gathering, analysis and organization of research materials.
  4. Enhanced their capacities for clear, coherent and sophisticated argument in both oral and written form (streams a and b).
  5. An understanding of the applicability of performance practice to the investigation of a research question, and experience in integrating evidence from the processes of performance into sustained conceptual argument (streams b and c).
  6. Developed their skills in the creative conceptualizing, organization and production of a sophisticated and original piece of work in the area of theatre and/or the performing arts (stream c).
  7. Understand and possess skills necessary to undertake postgraduate study.

Assessment

a) Dissertation Stream
Interim presentation (Hurdle): Students submit an annotated bibliography and / or completed chapter in draft form (2000 words); a timeframe for research detailing completion of thesis; and give an oral presentation providing argument summary and aims/significance of research (outcomes 2, 3 and 4)
b) Investigative Project / Dissertation Stream
Interim presentation (Hurdle): As per stream a OR students provide a written and oral account of their work in process providing argument summary and aims/significance of research (outcomes 2, 3 and 4).
c) Investigative Project Stream
Interim presentation (Hurdle): Students provide a written (1500 word) and oral (5-10 minute) account of their work in process providing argument summary and aims/significance of research (outcomes 2, 3 and 4).
