Synopsis

Indonesia is Australia's nearest and largest Asian neighbour. Changing perceptions of Indonesia and Indonesians have had a significant impact on Australian foreign policy and interactions between citizens of both countries. This unit looks closely at the ways in which Indonesia has been represented at various stages of its history. Using visual sources, film, novels, cartoons, letters and archival documents the unit will trace changing images and representations of the archipelago from colonial times to the present day.
