Synopsis

Major topics covered include:

  1. a range of basic optimization techniques applicable to quantitative decision making, including linear programming,
  2. techniques for collecting, exploring, presenting and interpreting data,
  3. modelling and calculation of probabilities relating to outcomes of chance experiments and random variables derived from them,
  4. techniques for using computer-generated random numbers to simulate observations on random variables and simple probability models, and
  5. techniques for making inferences about population parameters from sample data.

Objectives

On completion of unit MTH9030 students will have extended their knowledge of a range of mathematical and statistical techniques, in the process developing skills in investigation, modelling and problem solving in theoretical and real life contexts incorporating uncertainty; they will be able to make effective use of graphics calculators, spreadsheets and statistical software in data analysis, and will have developed skills in communicating the results of mathematical and statistical analyses. They will also have developed an awareness of common misconceptions they and others have with concepts of probability and statistics.

Assessment

Examination (3 hours): 60%
3 Assignments: 30%
On-line activities: 10%
Students will be required to pass at least two assignments and the final examination to be awarded a pass grade in the unit.
