Synopsis

This unit assists students to understand business practices in the context of EU economic, social and employment policy. Through critical discussion, EU business regulation and practice is related to issues of international trade theory, globalisation, EU enlargement, business culture diversity, FDI policy and performance, and international business strategies in multinationals. A comparison between EU and Australia, based on these criteria is also discussed. A concluding lecture is devoted to the past, present and future of Australia-EU trade/business relations.

Objectives

The learning goals associated with this unit are to:

  • acquire understanding of the main issues related to the interplay between business practice and social policy in the EU
  • interpret information and research on debates around the impact of social policy (eg the European social model(s) on economic performance and social progress
  • analyse the key priorities and structural elements of business regulation in the EU
  • explain the benefits and challenges of the existing business and social policies in the EU, and
  • evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the EU business environment in comparison with other countries and/or regions (eg Australia).
