Synopsis

In this unit, core research-based psychotherapies and psychological counselling skills are studied and practised. Topics include various current psychotherapies, models of psychotherapeutic helping, advanced skills, issues in evaluating evidence and outcome, assumptions and issues underlying research paradigms in counselling psychology, psychopharmacology, diversity-sensitive psychotherapy.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and application of the relevant psychological counselling microskills and be able to integrate them to conduct sessions; be able to describe and apply sound practice principles concerning the therapeutic relationship setting, and interventions, and be able to critically discuss and apply the research concerning the scientific evaluation of various psychotherapies.

Assessment

Clinical Development Journal Part I (equivalent to 1,600 words):20%; Transcript and annotation of an initial counselling session (equivalent to 3600 words): 45%; and Clinical Development Journal Part II (equivalent to 2,800 words):35%

Off-campus attendance requirements

Off-campus students must attend a one (1) week Residential school

Prerequisites

Successful completion of an Australian Psychological Society (APS) accredited four year sequence in psychology
