Description

This degree is aimed at students with musical abilities who are also interested in gaining a knowledge of the business sector. Students undertake core studies across the major commerce disciplines, as well as a major sequence in one of these areas. They also undertake a music performance or composition major and either composition (if not primary major), musicology or ethnomusicology as their second major.

Objectives

The commerce component of this double degree provides a professional education in a range of commerce and business disciplines with a strong emphasis on developing analytical skills.* The music component contains both theoretical and practical modules that prepare graduates for a range of roles within the music industry.

Structure

This course consists of 96 points in the music component and 96 points in the commerce component.

Areas of study

Arts

Students complete the prescribed sequence in music from the Faculty of Arts.

Commerce

Students complete a major specialisation in one of the following areas taught by the Faculty of Business and Economics:

  • accounting
  • Asian development and transition
  • business modelling
  • business law and taxation
  • competition, regulation and public policy
  • econometrics and business statistics
  • economics
  • finance
  • human resource management
  • information, strategy and decision making
  • international commerce
  • labour and employment
  • management
  • marketing
  • sustainability.

All units taken as part of the major specialisation are limited to units taught by departments of the faculty on the Clayton campus.

Other studies may be drawn from any of the disciplines taught on the Clayton campus by the Faculty of Business and Economics.

Requirements

The degree requirements are:

Music component

(a.) a performance or composition major (48 points)

(b.) a second music major (48 points)

(c.) further third year level music units (12 points).

Commerce component

(a.) Students complete 16 units (96 points) from the Faculty of Business and Economics as follows:

(i.) six compulsory common core units (36 points):

  • AFC1000 Principles of accounting and finance
  • BTC1110 Business law
  • ECC1000 Principles of microeconomics
  • ETC1000 Business and economic statistics
  • MGC1010 Introduction to management
  • MKC1200 Principles of marketing

(ii.) at least two units (12 points) from the following list:

  • AFC1030 Introduction to financial accounting, or AFC2140 Corporate finance
  • ECC1100 Principles of macroeconomics
  • ETC1010 Data modelling and computing
  • MGC1020 Organisations: Contexts and strategies

First-year students normally may not take a second-year unit until at least four first-year units have been completed successfully.

(iii.) a major of eight units (48 points):*

  • the major must come from the approved list of majors**
  • at least two units (12 points) must be completed at each of second and third-year levels

* Depending on the major chosen, one of the units in the major may have already been studied as part of the group of common core units - where this is the case, students will complete an additional unit as detailed below.

(iv.) additional units from the faculty in the Bachelor of Commerce at the Clayton campus to reach the required minimum of 16 units.

Additional commerce degree requirements:

  • a maximum of eight first-year-level units (48 points)
  • a minimum of four third-year-level units (24 points) must be from those offered by the faculty on the campus delivering this program.
  • in addition to specific unit prerequisites, second -year level units require the successful completion of three first-year level units and third-year level units require the successful completion of two second-year level units.

Alternative exit(s)

Students may graduate with the Bachelor of Music at the end of three years of study by transferring into the single Bachelor of Music degree provided they have met the requirements of the Bachelor of Music. Students may exit from the double degree program and graduate with the Bachelor of Commerce provided they have met the requirements of the Bachelor of Commerce.
