Guided reading in an area of students choice that is relevant to the notion of English as an International Language, subject to the approval of the lecturer. Students also conduct research which leads to written tasks on a question or topic relevant to their guided reading.
Upon successful completion of this unit students will be able to
- understand the key notions surrounding the use of English as an International Language,
- understand the more important aspects of the relationship between language, ideology, and culture, and
- apply the notions covered in 1-2 in the analysis of the status or use of English in a particular society, a particular institution, or by a particular group of people
Written work: 90%
Oral presentation: 10%
Maximum one hour per fortnight
Major in English as an International Language with an average grade of 70% or higher.
